‘Vocabulary’
- Delectable (adj.)
Meaning: (of food or drink) delicious. (स्वादिष्ट)
Synonyms: delicious, mouthwatering, appetizing
Antonyms: distasteful, tasteless, flavorless,
Sentence: Delectable smells rose from the kitchen.
- Dovetailing (verb)
Meaning: to be in agreement on every point (सहमत होना)
Synonyms: according, agreeing
Antonyms: differing, disagreeing
Sentence: The Union and the Confederate accounts of the battle don’t dovetail at all.
- Heterodox (adj.)
Meaning: not conforming with accepted or orthodox standards or beliefs. (विधर्मिक)
Synonyms: unorthodox, heretical, dissenting
Antonyms: conformist, conventional, orthodox
Sentence: His opinions have always been distinctly heterodox.
- Temerity (noun)
Meaning: excessive confidence or boldness; audacity. (उतावलापन)
Synonyms: audacity, boldness, audaciousness
Antonyms: bashfulness, diffidence, hesitancy
Sentence: He had the temerity to ask for higher wages after only a day’s work.
- Presage (noun)
Meaning: a sign or warning that something, typically something bad, will happen; an omen or portent. (पूर्व-सूचना)
Synonyms: sign, indication, portent
Sentence: Those black clouds presage a storm.
- Nagging (adj.)
Meaning: (of a person) constantly harassing someone to do something. (काम करने के लिए परेशान करना)
Synonyms: grumbling, hounding, scolding
Antonyms: acclaiming, applauding
Sentence: He wanted to get away from his nagging parents.
- Edict (noun)
Meaning: an official order or proclamation issued by a person in authority. (अध्यादेश)
Synonyms: decree, order, command
Sentence: The festival was banned by royal edict.
- Baiting (verb)
Meaning: deliberately annoy or taunt (someone). (उत्पीड़न)
Synonyms: taunt, goad, provoke
Antonyms: appease, conciliate, mollify
Sentence: I wished the candidates would stop baiting each other and instead address the real issues.
- Anomaly (noun)
Meaning: something that deviates from what is standard, normal, or expected. (विसंगति)
Synonyms: oddity, peculiarity, abnormality
Antonyms: norm, ordinary, usual
Sentence: Snow in July is an anomaly in most of the northern hemisphere.
- Parley (noun)
Meaning: a conference between opposing sides in a dispute, especially a discussion of terms for an armistice. (बातचीत)
Synonyms: negotiation, talk, meeting
Sentence: The governor was forced to parley with the rebels.
