 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Tightfisted (adj.)

Meaning: not willing to spend or give much money; miserly. (कंजूस)

Synonyms: miserly, parsimonious, niggardly

Antonyms: charitable, munificent, openhanded

Sentence: The company is pretty tightfisted when it comes to bonuses.

  1. Exhorted (verb)

Meaning: to try to persuade (someone) through earnest appeals to follow a course of action (बढ़ावा देना)

Synonyms: encouraged, goaded, nudged

Antonyms: deterred, discouraged, dissuaded

Sentence: The general exhorted his men to fight well.

  1. Commotion (noun)

Meaning: a state of confused and noisy disturbance. (हल्ला गुल्ला)

Synonyms: disturbance, ruckus, uproar

Antonyms: calm, hush, peace

Sentence: She was distracted by a commotion across the street.

  1. Snazzy (adj.)

Meaning: stylish and attractive. (अत्यधिक आकर्षित)

Synonyms: stylish, smart, attractive

Antonyms: simple, unadorned, unfashionable

Sentence: Paula’s wearing a very snazzy pair of shoes!

  1. Tacit (adj.)

Meaning: understood or implied without being stated. (समझना)

Synonyms: implied, implicit, understood

Antonyms: explicit, express, obvious

Sentence: The deal had the tacit approval of the President.

  1. Letup (noun)

Meaning: a usually gradual decrease in the pace or level of activity of something (कम होना)

Synonyms: slowdown, decline, deceleration

Antonyms: acceleration, quickening, hastening

Sentence: The downpour continued for hours without letup.

  1. Discretionary (adj.)

Meaning: available for use at the discretion of the user. (वैकल्पिक)

Synonyms: optional, non-compulsory, voluntary

Antonyms: compulsory, mandatory, nonelective

Sentence: The company used to give discretionary bonus payments.

  1. Overkill (noun)

Meaning: the state or an instance of going beyond what is usual, proper, or needed (अति करना)

Synonyms: surplus, excess, overflow

Antonyms: deficiency, deficit, insufficiency

Sentence: That’s enough, anymore just overkill.

  1. Vertiginous (adj.)

Meaning: having or causing a whirling sensation; liable to failing (चक्कर आना)

Synonyms: giddy, dizzy, woozy

Antonyms: steady, stable, clearheaded

Sentence: 3-D effect is likely to leave some audience members feeling vertiginous.

  1. Immaculately (adv.)

Meaning: in a perfectly clean, neat, or tidy manner. (विशुद्धता से)

Synonyms: tidily, orderly, neatly

Antonyms: sloppily, inelegantly, slovenly

Sentence: As always, he was immaculately dressed.
