 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Conviction (noun)

Meaning: A state of mind in which one is free from doubt (दृढ विश्वास)

Synonyms: resoluteness, certainty, confidence

Antonyms: doubt, uncertainty, hesitation

Sentence: It is our firm conviction that a step forward has been taken.

  1. Daft (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing a very abnormal or sick state of mind (मूर्ख)

Synonyms: psychotic, mad, crazy

Antonyms: normal, wise, sensible

Sentence: The king was clearly daft, talking to trees and rocks as if they were people

  1. Ire (noun)

Meaning: An intense emotional state of displeasure with someone or something (क्रोध)

Synonyms: indignation, anger, wrath

Antonyms: pleasure, delight, patience

Sentence: The patronizing comment from the snooty waiter roused her ire

  1. Wail (noun)

Meaning: A crying out in grief (विलाप)

Synonyms: cry, weeping, tears

Antonyms: smiling, laughing, cheering

Sentence: The women began to wail in mourning.

  1. Conspicuously (adv.)

Meaning: In a clearly visible way. (सुस्पष्ट)

Synonyms: smartly, neatly, strikingly

Antonyms: dully, simply, boringly

Sentence: Local women were conspicuously absent from the meeting.

  1. Lacunae (noun)

Meaning: A falling short of an essential or desirable amount or number (अभाव)

Synonyms: lacks, shortages, insufficiencies

Antonyms: sufficiencies, surpluses, excesses

Sentence: Attributes many of the nation’s problems to a lacuna of leadership at the top

  1. Genteel (adj.)

Meaning: Having or showing a taste for the fine arts and gracious living (सभ्य)

Synonyms: civilized, cultured, polished

Antonyms: uncivilized, ignorant, uncultured

Sentence: The game seemed to be a more genteel version of American football.

  1. Drearier (adj.)

Meaning: Causing or marked by an atmosphere lacking in cheer (नीरस)

Synonyms: depressing, depressive, lonely

Antonyms: cheerful, cheery, friendly

Sentence: Vowed that he would never take a desk job working in a dreary office

  1. Bogus (adj.)

Meaning: Being such in appearance only and made with or manufactured from usually cheaper materials (जाली)

Synonyms: fake, artificial, dummy

Antonyms: real, natural, pure

Sentence: For that price, you’re only going to get furniture covered in bogus leather and not the real stuff

  1. Maroons (verb)

Meaning: To cause to remain behind (असहाय कर)

Synonyms: dumps, strands, abandons

Antonyms: possesses, retains, owns

Sentence: He is in a maroons state, you cannot blame him for anything.
