The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  2nd March 2023

In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Evocative (adj.)

Meaning: bringing strong images, memories, or feelings to mind. (स्मरणपत्र का)

Synonyms: reminiscent, remindful, redolent

Antonyms: unreminiscent

Sentence: Those old toys are evocative of my boyhood.

  1. Ordeal (noun)

Meaning: a painful or horrific experience, especially a protracted one. (अप्रिय अनुभव)

Synonyms: trial, hardship, challenge

Sentence: He was subjected to a terrible six-day ordeal.

  1. Maximal (adj.)

Meaning: of or constituting a maximum; the highest or greatest possible.  (अधिक से अधिक)

Synonyms: greatest, maximized, utmost

Antonyms: minimal, minimum, least

Sentence: He obtained maximal benefit from the course.

  1. Remonstrance (noun)

Meaning: a feeling or declaration of disapproval or dissent (विरोध)

Synonyms: objection, complaint, expostulation

Antonyms: approval, sanction, willingness

Sentence: Over the vociferous remonstrances of my parents I decided to drop my music lessons.

  1. Prolific (adj.)

Meaning:  producing in large numbers or quantities; plentiful (फलदार)

Synonyms: fertile, rich, productive

Antonyms: unproductive, sterile, barren

Sentence: Few composers can match his prolific output.

  1. Nought (pronoun)

Meaning: nothing (शून्य)

Synonyms: nil, zero, blank

Sentence: He’s naught but a worthless fool.

  1. Cogitate (verb)

Meaning: think deeply about something; meditate or reflect. (सोच-विचार करना)

Synonyms: ponder, contemplate, debate

Antonyms: ignore, disregard, overlook

Sentence: I need a few days to cogitate the problem.

  1. Depredation (noun)

Meaning: an act of attacking or plundering. (लूट-पाट)

Synonyms: plunder, looting, pillaging

Antonyms: rescue, salvage, salvation

Sentence: The entire area has suffered the depredations of war.

  1. Yoked (verb)

Meaning: to put or bring together so as to form a new and longer whole (जोड़ना)

Synonyms: catenated, chained, compounded

Antonyms: disconnected, disjoined, disunited

Sentence: He yoked several ideas together to come up with a new theory

  1. Indecipherable (adj.)

Meaning: not able to be read or understood. (अस्पष्ट)

Synonyms: hard to read, unreadable, indiscernible

Antonyms: decipherable, readable

Sentence: There was an indecipherable message on the answering machine.
