 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Stern (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person or their manner) serious and unrelenting, especially in the assertion of authority and exercise of discipline. (कठोर)

Synonyms: serious, unsmiling, frowning

Antonyms: clement, forbearing, gentle

Sentence: He was a stern critic but an extremely kindly man.

  1. Caveat (noun)

Meaning: a warning or proviso of specific stipulations, conditions, or limitations. (चेतावनी)

Synonyms: warning, caution, admonition

Sentence: There are a number of caveats which concern the validity of the assessment results.

  1. Gamut (noun)

Meaning: the complete range or scope of something. (सीमा)

Synonyms: range, spectrum, span

Sentence: College life opened up a whole gamut of new experiences.

  1. Munificent (adj.)

Meaning: (of a gift or sum of money) larger or more generous than is usual or necessary. (उदार)

Synonyms: generous, bountiful, openhanded

Antonyms: mean, cheap, thrifty

Sentence: A former student has donated a munificent sum of money to the college.

  1. Brawl (noun)

Meaning: a rough or noisy fight or quarrel. (विवाद)

Synonyms: fight, tussle, quarrel

Antonyms: quiet, silence

Sentence: He’d got into a drunken brawl in a bar.

  1. Grueling (adj.)

Meaning: extremely tiring and demanding. (भीषण)

Synonyms: exhausting, tiring, fatiguing

Antonyms: facile, light, simple

Sentence: The President was working grueling eighteen-hour days trying to save the Great Deal.

  1. Hasty (adj.)

Meaning: done or acting with excessive speed or urgency; hurried. (तेज़)

Synonyms: quick, hurried, fast

Antonyms: deliberate, unhurried, unrushed

Sentence: They shouldn’t have made such a hasty decision.

  1. Gruesome (adj.)

Meaning: causing repulsion or horror; grisly. (भयंकर)

Synonyms: frightful, horrid, fearful

Antonyms: cheering, comforting, soothing

Sentence: There has been a series of gruesome murders in the capital.

  1. Abominable (adj.)

Meaning: causing moral revulsion. (घिनौना)

Synonyms: loathsome, detestable, hateful

Antonyms: innocuous, inoffensive, healthy

Sentence: The uprising was suppressed with abominable cruelty.

  1. Fledgling (noun)

Meaning: a person who is just starting out in a field of activity (अनुभवहीन मनुष्य)

Synonyms: learner, student, trainee

Antonyms: expert, master, veteran

Sentence: In my junior year a friend, a fledgling pilot, taught me the basics of handling a small plane.
