The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  30th December 2025

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Ramshackle (adj.)

Meaning: (especially of a house or vehicle) in a state of severe disrepair. (बरबाद)

Synonyms: tumbledown, dilapidated

Antonyms: new, fresh, brand-new

Sentence: They entered the shop, which was a curious ramshackle building.

  1. Tempestuous (adj.)

Meaning: characterized by strong and turbulent or conflicting emotion. (तूफ़ानी)

Synonyms: violent, turbulent, fierce

Antonyms: peaceful, peaceable, calm

Sentence: She burst into a tempestuous fit of anger.

  1. Euphemism (noun)

Meaning: a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing. (व्यंजना)

Synonyms: metaphor, phrase, term

Sentence: The article made so much use of euphemism that often its meaning was unclear.

  1. Flagrant (adj.)

Meaning: very noticeable especially for being incorrect or bad (दोषपूर्ण)

Synonyms: blatant, glaring, obvious

Antonyms: imperceptible, slight, unobtrusive

Sentence: The judge called the decision “a flagrant violation of international law”.

  1. Carp (verb)

Meaning: to express dissatisfaction, pain, or resentment usually tiresomely (शिकायत)

Synonyms: complain, scream, whine

Antonyms: delight, rejoice, accept

Sentence: Someone who carps and whines about everything is a pain.

  1. Quisling (noun)

Meaning: a traitor who collaborates with an enemy force occupying their country. (ग़द्दार)

Synonyms: apostate, backstabber, betrayer

Sentence: King warned that all quislings would be punished without mercy.

  1. Sojourn (noun)

Meaning: a temporary residing as another’s guest (ठहरना)

Synonyms: stay, visit, tarry

Sentence: My sojourn in the youth hostel was thankfully short.

  1. Decrepitude (noun)

Meaning: the state of being decrepit. (जीर्णता)

Synonyms: feebleness, enfeeblement, infirmity

Antonyms: health, healthiness, wellness

Sentence: She was saddened by the decrepitude of many of the nursing home residents.

  1. Secessionism (noun)

Meaning: the act or process of a whole separating into two or more parts (अलगाव)

Synonyms: bifurcation, division, partition

Antonyms: association, aggregation, unification

Sentence: Fundamentalism and secessionism are of course a direct result of poor governance.

  1. Confuting (verb)

Meaning: prove (a person or an assertion) to be wrong. (झूठा ठहराना)

Synonyms: disprove, show/prove to be false, contradict

Antonyms: proving, validating, verifying

Sentence: Theories which will eventually be confirmed or confuted by experience.
