‘Vocabulary’
- Nullity (noun)
Meaning: a person of no importance or influence (व्यर्थता)
Synonyms: insignificancy, nonentity, inferior
Antonyms: bigwig, eminence, notable
Sentence: The judge’s order was a nullity and no effective variation was made of the earlier flawed order of the justices.
- Sentinel (noun)
Meaning: a soldier or guard whose job is to stand and keep watch. (पहरेदार)
Synonyms: bodyguard, convoy, defender
Sentence: The sentinel was stationed on a hill.
- Balmy (adj.)
Meaning: (of the weather) pleasantly warm. (ख़ुशबूदार)
Synonyms: mild, gentle, temperate
Antonyms: harsh, inclement, intemperate
Sentence: Brilliant blue skies and unseasonably balmy weather prevailed.
- Transcendent (adj.)
Meaning: beyond or above the range of normal or merely physical human experience. (उत्कृष्ट)
Synonyms: magical, miraculous, phenomenal
Antonyms: average, common, natural
Sentence: The Olympics are a transcendent event.
- Encapsulates (verb)
Meaning: express the essential features of (something) succinctly. (संक्षेप)
Synonyms: summarize, abstracts, sums up
Antonyms: elongates, extends, lengthens
Sentence: Can you encapsulate the speech in about a paragraph?
- Onerous (adj.)
Meaning: (of a task, duty, or responsibility) involving an amount of effort and difficulty that is oppressively burdensome. (कष्टदायक)
Synonyms: burdensome, inconvenient, troublesome
Antonyms: comfortable, cozy, easy
Sentence: This is the most onerous task I have ever undertaken.
- Hiatus (noun)
Meaning: a pause or gap in a sequence, series, or process. (विराम)
Synonyms: pause, break, interval
Antonyms: continuation, continuity
Sentence: There was a brief hiatus in the war.
- Reciprocity (noun)
Meaning: the practice of exchanging things with others for mutual benefit, especially privileges granted by one country or organization to another. (आदान-प्रदान करना)
Synonyms: collaboration, mutualism, harmony
Antonyms: antagonism, antipathy, enmity
Sentence: The proposal calls for reciprocity in trade relations.
- Skeptical (adj.)
Meaning: not easily convinced; having doubts or reservations. (उलझन में)
Synonyms: dubious, doubtful, incredulous
Antonyms: credulous, gullible, trustful
Sentence: I am rather skeptical about their professed sympathy for the poor.
- Quinquennial (adj.)
Meaning: recurring every five years. (पाँच वर्ष का समय)
Sentence: The fifth edition of Greater New York, a quinquennial survey at MoMA PS1, was delayed a year by the pandemic.
