The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  3rd February 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Extortionist (noun)

Meaning: a person who tries to obtain something through force or violence; a racketeer. (लुटेरा)

Synonyms: racketeer, extortioner, extorter

Sentence: The briefcase is full of money that some extortionists want back.

  1. Oodles (noun)

Meaning: a very great number or amount of something. (अधिक संख्या)

Synonyms: abundance, basketful, boatload

Antonyms: ace, bit, little

Sentence: They’ve got oodles of money.

  1. Listless (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person or their manner) lacking energy or enthusiasm. (सुस्त)

Synonyms: lethargic, enervated, lackadaisical

Antonyms: energetic, enterprising, motivated

Sentence: When I had the flu, I felt listless and worn-out.

  1. Suffuses (verb)

Meaning: gradually spread through or over. (फैलाना)

Synonyms: permeate, spread over, spread throughout

Sentence: The living room suffused with warm sunlight.

  1. Protean (adj.)

Meaning: tending or able to change frequently or easily. (परिवर्तनशील)

Synonyms: ever-changing, variable, changeable

Sentence: It is difficult to comprehend the whole of this protean subject.

  1. Concomitant (adj.)

Meaning: naturally accompanying or associated. (सहगामी)

Synonyms: attendant, accompanying, associated

Sentence: Disease is all too often one of the concomitants of poverty.

  1. Nihilism (noun)

Meaning: the rejection of all religious and moral principles, in the belief that life is meaningless. (शून्यवाद)

Synonyms: disbelief, rejection, repudiation

Antonyms: belief, faith, approval

Sentence: The implicit nihilism and aggression are global.

  1. Agility (noun)

Meaning: ability to move quickly and easily. (चुस्ती)

Synonyms: sleight, dexterity, nimbleness

Antonyms: inability, incapability, incapacity

Sentence: I admired his considerable mental agility.

  1. Plaintive (adj.)

Meaning: sounding sad and mournful. (दर्दनाक)

Synonyms: mournful, sad, wistful

Antonyms: delighted, exulting, glorying

Sentence: “What about me?” came a plaintive voice.

  1. Hollering (verb)

Meaning: (of a person) give a loud shout or cry. (चिल्लाना)

Synonyms: shout, yell, cry

Antonyms: mumbling, murmuring, whispering

Sentence: Hollering at me isn’t going to find us a parking place.
