‘Vocabulary’
- Purview (noun)
Meaning: the scope of the influence or concerns of something. (परिधि)
Synonyms: ambit, horizon
Sentence: This matter comes within the purview of the Department of Health.
- Multifarious (adj.)
Meaning: many and of various types. (विविध)
Synonyms: multiform, multiple, different
Antonyms: monolithic, alike, identical
Sentence: Spain is a composite of multifarious traditions and people.
- Ulterior (adj.)
Meaning: existing beyond what is obvious or admitted; intentionally hidden. (गुप्त)
Synonyms: secondary, underlying, undisclosed
Antonyms: open, public
Sentence: She definitely had an ulterior motive in offering to help.
- Embroil (verb)
Meaning: involve (someone) deeply in an argument, conflict, or difficult situation. (उलझाना)
Synonyms: involve, ensnare, enmesh
Antonyms: emancipated, freed, liberated
Sentence: Take care not to get embroiled with those people.
- Ensconce (verb)
Meaning: establish or settle (someone) in a comfortable, safe, or secret place. (स्थापित करना)
Synonyms: settle, install, establish
Sentence: After dinner, I ensconced myself in a deep armchair with a book.
- Hapless (adj.)
Meaning: (especially of a person) unfortunate. (बदकिस्मत)
Synonyms: unfortunate, unlucky, luckless
Antonyms: fortunate, happy, lucky
Sentence: All of them were hapless victims of this hurricane.
- Putrid (adj.)
Meaning: (of organic matter) decaying or rotting and emitting a fetid smell. (सड़ा हुआ)
Synonyms: decomposing, decomposed, decaying
Antonyms: fresh, good, undecomposed
Sentence: What’s that putrid smell?
- Dilapidated (adj.)
Meaning: (of a building or object) in a state of disrepair or ruin as a result of age or neglect. (उबड खाबड)
Synonyms: run-down, tumbledown, ramshackle
Antonyms: ameliorated, improved
Sentence: The building had been dilapidated by neglect.
- Shellacking (noun)
Meaning: failure to win a contest (पराजित करना)
Synonyms: beating, defeat, drubbing
Antonyms: success, triumph, victory
Sentence: We gave their team a real shellacking.
- Conscientious (adj.)
Meaning: (of a person) wishing to do what is right, especially to do one’s work or duty well and thoroughly. (ईमानदार)
Synonyms: diligent, industrious, punctilious
Antonyms: dishonest, unethical, corrupt
Sentence: We are generally very conscientious about our work.
