 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Merriment (noun)

Meaning: gaiety and fun. (आमोद)

Synonyms: exuberance, cheerfulness, gaiety

Antonyms: dejection, depression, despondence

Sentence: Their unexpected merriment made him nervously inquire as to the reason for it.

  1. Kith (noun)

Meaning: one’s friends, acquaintances, and relations. (स्वजन)

Synonyms: family, kin, relations

Sentence: I had a reunion today with all my kith and kin.

  1. Reactionary (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person or a set of views) opposing political or social liberalization or reform. (प्रतिक्रियावादी)

Synonyms: conservative, rightist, orthodox

Antonyms: liberal, nonconservative

Sentence: The reactionary officer then ordered him arrested.

  1. Cataclysmic (adj.)

Meaning: relating to or denoting a violent natural event. (दुर्घटना)

Synonyms: disastrous, catastrophic, calamitous

Antonyms: non-destructive, protective

Sentence: These countries are on the brink of cataclysmic famine.

  1. Obsequious (adj.)

Meaning: obedient or attentive to an excessive or servile degree. (चापलूस)

Synonyms: servile, ingratiating, unctuous

Antonyms: insurgent, mutinous, mulish

Sentence: The salesman’s obsequious manner was beginning to irritate me.

  1. Portentous (adj.)

Meaning: of or like a portent. (अमंगल)

Synonyms: ominous, warning, foreshadowing

Antonyms: unthreatening, auspicious, benign

Sentence: There was nothing portentous or solemn about him.

  1. Enraptured (verb)

Meaning: give intense pleasure or joy to. (मंत्रमुग्ध)

Synonyms: delight, give great pleasure to, give joy to

Antonyms: depressed, discouraged, disheartened

Sentence: The audience was enraptured by her beautiful voice.

  1. Ovation (noun)

Meaning: a sustained and enthusiastic show of appreciation from an audience, especially by means of applause. (वाहवाही)

Synonyms: applause, handclapping, clapping

Antonyms: booing, hissing, taunt

Sentence: He received the longest ovation of the evening.

  1. Addendum (noun)

Meaning: an item of additional material, typically omissions, added at the end of a book or other publication. (परिशिष्ट)

Synonyms: appendix, codicil, postscript

Antonyms: introduction, preface, prologue

Sentence: I follow this letter with the addendum duly signed for your attention.

  1. Execrable (adj.)

Meaning: extremely bad or unpleasant. (भद्दा)

Synonyms: appalling, awful, dreadful

Antonyms: excellent, fine, wonderful

Sentence: He stood at the desk, laboring in his execrable handwriting.
