The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  4th May 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Miffed (verb)

Meaning: aroused to impatience or anger (नाराजगी)

Synonyms: annoyed, peeved, irritated

Antonyms: delighted, pleased, relieved

Sentence: I was a bit miffed about that.

  1. Curio (noun)

Meaning: something unusual (विचित्रता)

Synonyms: oddity, rarity, peculiarity

Antonyms: ordinary, usual

Sentence: The street is lined with shops selling souvenirs and curios.

  1. Mirth (noun)

Meaning: amusement, especially as expressed in laughter. (प्रमोद)

Synonyms: merriment, cheer, hilarity

Antonyms: sorrow, sadness, unhappiness

Sentence: The performance produced much mirth among the audience.

  1. Burbled (verb)

Meaning: make a continuous murmuring noise. (बड़बड़ाहट)

Synonyms: murmur, muttering

Sentence: The little girl burbled with joy.

  1. Carouse (verb)

Meaning: drink plentiful amounts of alcohol and enjoy oneself with others in a noisy, lively way. (जश्न मनाना)

Synonyms: carousal, bender, spree

Sentence: They danced and caroused until the drink ran out.

  1. Careen (verb)

Meaning: to make a series of unsteady side-to-side motions (अस्थिर तरीके से चलना)

Synonyms: lurch, sway, wobble

Sentence: The ship careened out of control.

  1. Singe (verb)

Meaning: burn (something) superficially or lightly. (झुलसाना)

Synonyms: scorch, sear, swinge

Sentence: The fire had singed his eyebrows.

  1. Gourmet (noun)

Meaning: a connoisseur of good food; a person with a discerning palate. (खाने का शौकीन)

Synonyms: gastronome, epicure, foodie

Antonyms: hog, glutton

Sentence: A gourmet like him always eats in expensive restaurants.

  1. Maven (noun)

Meaning: a person with a high level of knowledge or skill in a field (विशेषज्ञ)

Synonyms: expert, scholar, master

Antonyms: amateur, novice, beginner

Sentence: What do film industry mavens make of this situation?

  1. Obfuscate (verb)

Meaning: render obscure, unclear, or unintelligible. (अस्पष्ट करना)

Synonyms: obscure, confuse, complicate

Antonyms: clarify, clear (up), simplify

Sentence: She was criticized for using arguments that obfuscated the main issue.
