The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  4th May 2026

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Finesse (noun)

Meaning: intricate and refined delicacy. (चालाकी)

Synonyms: ability, prowess, skill

Antonyms: ineptitude, incompetence, inadequacy

Sentence: It was a disappointing performance which lacked finesse.

  1. Vestige (noun)

Meaning: a trace of something that is disappearing or no longer exists. (शेष)

Synonyms: relic, trace, remnant

Sentence: There’s not a vestige of truth in the story.

  1. Ruminate (verb)

Meaning: think deeply about something. (चिंतन करना)

Synonyms: ponder, think, contemplate

Antonyms: ignore, disregard, overlook

Sentence: She ruminated for weeks about whether to tell him or not.

  1. Livid (adj.)

Meaning: feeling or showing anger (क्रोधित)

Synonyms: angry, enraged, outraged

Antonyms: delighted, pleased, happy

Sentence: The boss was livid when yet another deadline was missed.

  1. Pertain (verb)

Meaning: to have a relation or connection (संबंिधत)

Synonyms: relate to, refer, concern

Sentence: This matter does not pertain to politics.

  1. Obtuse (adj.)

Meaning: annoyingly insensitive or slow to understand. (मूर्ख)

Synonyms: stupid, dumb, idiotic

Antonyms: intelligent, brilliant, clever

Sentence: Forgive me for being obtuse, but I wish you’d explain that to me again.

  1. Jabberwocky (noun)

Meaning: unintelligible or meaningless talk (निरर्थक बातें)

Synonyms: nonsense, babble, prattle

Sentence: When he gets angry, he talks in a sort of agitated jabberwocky that is really quite comical.

  1. Astute (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing an ability to accurately assess situations or people and turn this to one’s advantage. (चतुर)

Synonyms: shrewd, sharp, wise

Antonyms: naïve, ingenuous, foolish

Sentence: It was an astute move to sell just before prices went down.

  1. Tousle (verb)

Meaning: to undo the proper order or arrangement of (अव्यवस्थित)

Synonyms: disrupt, shuffle, disarrange

Antonyms: arrange, regulate, organize

Sentence: His hair was tousled and he looked as if he’d just woken up.

  1. Quip (verb)

Meaning: make a witty remark. (ताना)

Synonyms: jest, joke

Sentence: “Flattery will get you nowhere,” she quipped.
