‘Vocabulary’
- Rubric (noun)
Meaning: a word or series of words often in larger letters placed at the beginning of a passage or at the top of a page in order to introduce or categorize (शीर्ष)
Synonyms: caption, head, header
Sentence: The rubrics at the beginning of the chapters are intended to be humorous.
- Repudiated (verb)
Meaning: refuse to accept or be associated with. (को अस्वीकार नहीं किया)
Synonyms: reject, renounce, abandon
Antonyms: accepted, adopted, embraced
Sentence: Socialism had been repudiated at the polls.
- Diurnal (adj.)
Meaning: occurring, done, produced, or appearing every day (प्रतिदिन)
Synonyms: daily, day-to-day, quotidian
Antonyms: monthly, weekly, yearly
Sentence: A love as constant and certain as the diurnal tides.
- Recalcitrant (adj.)
Meaning: having an obstinately uncooperative attitude toward authority or discipline. (आज्ञा न माननेवाला)
Synonyms: uncooperative, obstinately disobedient, intractable
Antonyms: amenable, biddable, compliant
Sentence: The University suspended the most recalcitrant students.
- Incendiary (adj.)
Meaning: (of a device or attack) designed to cause fires. (आग लगाने वाला)
Synonyms: combustible, flammable, inflammable
Sentence: Five incendiary devices were found in her house.
- Naught (noun)
Meaning: the numerical symbol 0 or the absence of number or quantity represented by it (शून्य)
Synonyms: nil, nothing, zero
Sentence: He’s naught but a worthless fool.
- Empyrean (adj.)
Meaning: relating to heaven or the sky. (स्वर्ग)
Synonyms: heavenly, celestial, ethereal
Antonyms: hellish, infernal
Sentence: Movie scenes set in heaven often suggest that harps are the favored instruments for empyrean music.
- Obsequious (adj.)
Meaning: obedient or attentive to an excessive or servile degree. (चापलूस)
Synonyms: servile, ingratiating, unctuous
Antonyms: insurgent, mutinous, mulish
Sentence: The salesman’s obsequious manner was beginning to irritate me.
- Sedate (adj.)
Meaning: calm, dignified, and unhurried. (गंभीर)
Synonyms: calm, tranquil, placid
Antonyms: facetious, kittenish, ludic
Sentence: The wedding was rather a sedate occasion.
- Perpetuity (noun)
Meaning: the state or quality of lasting forever. (अनंत काल)
Synonyms: eternity, everlasting, limitlessness
Antonyms: ephemerality, impermanence, temporariness
Sentence: These lands were granted to our family in perpetuity.
