 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Cronyism (noun)

Meaning: the unfair practice by a powerful person (such as a politician) of giving jobs and other favors to friends (पक्षपात)

Synonyms: bias, nepotism, favoritism

Antonyms: fairness, neutrality, impartiality

Sentence: The mayor has been accused of cronyism.

  1. Consternation (noun)

Meaning: feelings of anxiety or dismay, typically at something unexpected. (घबड़ाहट)

Synonyms: dismay, tension, panic

Antonyms: ease, contentment, tranquillity

Sentence: The announcement created surprise and consternation.

  1. Moxie (noun)

Meaning: strength of mind to carry on in spite of danger (साहस)

Synonyms: courage, bravery, heroism

Antonyms: cowardice, timidity

Sentence: He’s a small kid, but he has plenty of moxie.

  1. Affluent (adj.)

Meaning: having goods, property, or money in abundance (धनी)

Synonyms: wealthy, rich, prosperous

Antonyms: poor, impoverished, needy

Sentence: He is affluent and can afford to send his children to the best schools.

  1. Meliorate (verb)

Meaning: to make better (बेहतर बनाना)

Synonyms: improve, enhance, upgrade

Antonyms: worsen, impair, spoil

Sentence: Those regulations are intended to meliorate the working conditions of factory workers.

  1. Deride (verb)

Meaning: to make (someone or something) the object of unkind laughter (उपहास करना)

Synonyms: ridicule, mock, taunt

Antonyms: commend, applaud

Sentence: You shouldn’t deride their efforts.

  1. Svelte (adj.)

Meaning: having a noticeably small amount of body fat (दुर्बल)

Synonyms: skinny, slender, lean

Antonyms: plump, chubby, fat

Sentence: He was slim, svelte, and sophisticated.

  1. Gadfly (noun)

Meaning: one who is obnoxiously annoying (परेशान करने वाला)

Synonyms: nuisance, annoyer, persecutor

Antonyms: charmer, comforter, solacer

Sentence: The journalist was known as a gadfly for exposing hypocrisy in politics.

  1. Countermand (verb)

Meaning: to cancel (an order) especially by giving a new order (रद्द करना)

Synonyms: overturn, cancel, revoke

Antonyms: enact, establish, approve

Sentence: He was expelled for countermanding a direct order from the supervisor.

  1. Neophyte (noun)

Meaning: a person who is new to a subject, skill, or belief. (नौसिखिया)

Synonyms: beginner, rookie, novice

Antonyms: veteran, expert, master

Sentence: The company announced four-day free cooking classes to neophytes.
