The Hindu Editorial VOCAB: 6th June 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Hankering (noun)

Meaning: a strong desire to have or do something. (लालसा)

Synonyms: yearning, desire, appetency

Antonyms: revulsion, apathy

Sentence: I’ve always had a hankering to go to America.

  1. Enormity (noun)

Meaning: a grave crime or sin. (दुष्टता)

Synonyms: wickedness, evilness, vileness

Antonyms: goodness, righteousness, virtuousness

Sentence: The enormity of the crime has shocked even experienced policemen.

  1. Parry (noun)

Meaning: ward off (a weapon or attack) with a countermove. (बचाव)

Synonyms: ward off, fend off, stave off

Antonyms: face, deal with, encounter

Sentence: He parried the blow by holding his sword vertically.

  1. Cinch (noun)

Meaning: an extremely easy task. (आसान काम)

Synonyms: easy, uncomplicated, not difficult

Antonyms: tough, complicated, difficult

Sentence: This dish is a cinch to make.

  1. Heckling (verb)

Meaning: interrupt (a public speaker) with derisive or aggressive comments or abuse. (चिल्लाना)

Synonyms: jeer, taunt, disrupt

Sentence: The ceremony was disrupted by unprecedented heckling and slogan-chanting.

  1. Pleasantry (noun)

Meaning: an act or utterance that is a customary show of good manners (हाव-भाव)

Synonyms: gesture, courtesy, politeness

Sentence: “How are you” is merely a social pleasantry.

  1. Rendezvous (noun)

Meaning: a meeting at an agreed time and place, typically between two people. (मिलन)

Synonyms: appointment, assignation, date

Sentence: He made a rendezvous with her in Times Square.

  1. Imperceptibly (adv.)

Meaning: in a way that is so slight, gradual, or subtle as not to be perceived. (अगोचर रूप से)

Synonyms: crescively, gradually

Antonyms: abruptly, suddenly

Sentence: The disease develops gradually and imperceptibly.

  1. Writs (noun)

Meaning: a form of written command in the name of a court or other legal authority to act, or abstain from acting, in some way. (प्रादेश)

Synonyms: warrants, summonses, subpoenas

Sentence: There have been at least seven writs issued against him for late payment of bills.

  1. Persiflage (noun)

Meaning: light and slightly contemptuous mockery or banter. (ताना)

Synonyms: badinage, raillery, banter

Sentence: The persiflage is not appropriate when we are discussing such serious problems.
