‘Vocabulary’
- Balk (verb)
Meaning: to prevent from achieving a goal (बाधा डालना)
Synonyms: block, hinder, thwart
Antonyms: facilitate, assist, encourage
Sentence: Their strategies to balk the enemy had failed.
- Encrust (verb)
Meaning: cover (something) with a hard surface layer. (जमना)
Synonyms: coagulate, congeal, cover
Sentence: She arrived home with her knees encrusted with mud.
- Debauched (adj.)
Meaning: having or showing lowered moral character or standards (अनैतिक)
Synonyms: corrupt, debased, decadent
Antonyms: ethical, moral, uncorrupted
Sentence: The debauched philanderer was the talk of the town.
- Furlough (noun)
Meaning: leave of absence, especially that granted to a member of the armed services. (थोड़े दिन की छुट्टी)
Synonyms: discharge, break, recess
Antonyms: callback, recall
Sentence: This could mean a massive furlough of government workers.
- Ululate (verb)
Meaning: howl or wail as an expression of strong emotion, typically grief. (शोर मचाना)
Synonyms: howl, wail, yowl
Sentence: As the soldier’s body was laid out, the grieving widow began to ululate.
- Apocryphal (adj.)
Meaning: (of a story or statement) of doubtful authenticity, although widely circulated as being true. (शंकायुक्त)
Synonyms: fictitious, made-up, untrue
Antonyms: real, factual, literal
Sentence: Most of the stories about him are apocryphal.
- Toil (noun)
Meaning: work extremely hard or incessantly. (कठिन परिश्रम)
Synonyms: work hard, labor, drudgery
Antonyms: relax, repose, rest
Sentence: If you want knowledge, you must toil for it.
- Pelf (noun)
Meaning: money, especially when gained in a dishonest or dishonorable way. (धन)
Synonyms: bucks, cash, money
Sentence: He was a politician who seems more interested in pelf than in policy
- Conduit (noun)
Meaning: a channel for conveying water or other fluid. (पाइपलाइन)
Synonyms: channel, duct, pipe
Sentence: This is the major conduit for carrying water to the military base
- Knavery (noun)
Meaning: a playful or mischievous act intended as a joke (धूर्तता)
Synonyms: roguery, waggery, frolic
Sentence: Knavery may serve for a turn, but honesty is in the long run.
