The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  7th June 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Gawking (verb)

Meaning: stare openly and stupidly. (आंखे फाड़कर देखना)

Synonyms: gape, goggle, gaze

Sentence: I hate being gawked at!

  1. Habitude (noun)

Meaning: a habitual tendency or way of behaving. (लगन)

Synonyms: affection, affinity, aptitude

Antonyms: apathy, disfavor

Sentence: They have a lifelong habitude for talking too much.

  1. Intuitive (adj.)

Meaning: using or based on what one feels to be true even without conscious reasoning; instinctive. (स्वाभाविक)

Synonyms: instinctive, intuitional, instinctual

Sentence: Men are often regarded as less intuitive than women.

  1. Babel (noun)

Meaning: a confused noise made by a number of voices. (कोलाहल)

Synonyms: clamor, tumult, uproar

Antonyms: quiet, silence, calm

Sentence: She hushed the babel of her thoughts and tried to sleep.

  1. Frazzle (noun)

Meaning: the state of being completely exhausted (थकी हुई अवस्था)

Synonyms: exhaustion, fatigue, lethargy

Antonyms: refreshment, energy, rejuvenation

Sentence: The meeting left me feeling completely frazzled.

  1. Armament (noun)

Meaning: military weapons and equipment. (अस्त्र – शस्त्र)

Synonyms: weaponry, firearms, ordnance

Sentence: The unit has insufficient armament with which to do battle.

  1. Bewitched (verb)

Meaning: enchant and delight (someone). (मोहित करना)

Synonyms: fascinate, enchant, entice

Antonyms: offend, annoy, displease

Sentence: They both were bewitched by the country and its culture.

  1. Haggle (verb)

Meaning: dispute or bargain persistently, especially over the cost of something. (सौदेबाज़ी करना)

Synonyms: barter, bargain, negotiate

Sentence: Ella taught her how to haggle with used furniture dealers.

  1. Relegate (verb)

Meaning: consign or dismiss to an inferior rank or position. (बाहर निकाल देना)

Synonyms: downgrade, lower in rank, put down

Antonyms: ascent, rise, upswing

Sentence: They aim to prevent women from being relegated to a secondary role.

  1. Unbosom (verb)

Meaning: disclose (one’s thoughts or secrets). (प्रकट करना)

Synonyms: disclose, discover, divulge

Antonyms: cloak, conceal, enshroud

Sentence: You’ll feel better if you unbosom your sorrows to me.
