 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Pecuniary (adj.)

Meaning: relating to or consisting of money. (धन-संबंधी)

Synonyms: financial, monetary, economic

Antonyms: nonfinancial

Sentence: She denies obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception.

  1. Affront (noun)

Meaning: An act or expression showing scorn and usually intended to hurt another’s feelings. (तिरस्कार)

Synonyms: insult, offence, sarcasm

Antonyms: compliment, praise, commendation

Sentence: Took it as an affront that she wasn’t invited to say a few words at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

  1. Stifle (verb)

Meaning: To be or cause to be killed by lack of breathable air. (दबाना)

Synonyms: strangle, choke, smother

Antonyms: breathe, inspire, expire

Sentence: The government failed to stifle the unrest.

  1. Insipid (adj.)

Meaning: Lacking in taste or flavor. (फीका)

Synonyms: bland, thin, tasteless

Antonyms: loathsome, tasty, disgusting

Sentence: An apple pie with a mushy, insipid filling that strongly resembled soggy cardboard.

  1. Disgraceful (adj.)

Meaning: shockingly unacceptable. (शर्मनाक)

Synonyms: shameful, shocking, scandalous

Antonyms: admirable, honourable

Sentence: An honourable death is better than a disgraceful life.

  1. Connivance (noun)

Meaning: A secret agreement or cooperation between two parties for an illegal or dishonest purpose. (मिलीभगत)

Synonyms: conspiracy, complicity, collusion

Sentence: Was able to sneak out at night with the connivance of a camp counsellor.

  1. Deflate (verb)

Meaning: To become smaller in size or volume due to loss of contents. (हवा निकालना)

Synonyms: collapse, compress, flatten

Antonyms: inflate, bulk, increase

Sentence: One sharp remark is enough to deflate her.

  1. Stricture (noun)

Meaning: Something that limits one’s freedom of action or choice. (सख्ती)

Synonyms:  restriction, constraint, limitation

Antonyms: freedom, latitude

Sentence: This stricture has been repeated in many literary and critical theories in this century.

  1. Align (verb)

Meaning: To bring to or be in a state of agreement. (जुड़ना)

Synonyms: agree, correspond, coincide

Antonyms: disrupt, skew

Sentence: We must align ourselves with the workers.

  1. Heckle (verb)

Meaning: To attack repeatedly with mean put-downs or insults (गाली-गलौज करना)

Synonyms: taunt, tease, mock

Sentence: A small group of youths stayed behind to heckle and shout abuse.
