 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Susceptible (adj.)

Meaning: likely or liable to be influenced or harmed by a particular thing. (अतिसंवेदनशील)

Synonyms: open to, receptive to, vulnerable to

Antonyms: insusceptible, invulnerable, unexposed

Sentence: Patients with liver disease may be susceptible to infection.

  1. Abrasive (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person or manner) showing little concern for the feelings of others; harsh. (कठोर)

Synonyms: vitriolic, rough, harsh

Antonyms: delightful, pleasing

Sentence: Her abrasive and arrogant personal style won her few friends.

  1. Lobbying (verb)

Meaning: seek to influence (a politician or public official) on an issue. (पक्ष जुटाव)

Synonyms: seek to influence, try to persuade, importune

Sentence: it is recommended that booksellers lobby their representatives.

  1. Ravage (noun)

Meaning: cause severe and extensive damage to. (नाश)

Synonyms: lay waste, devastate, ruin

Antonyms: restore, fix, recover

Sentence: Fears that a war could ravage their country

  1. Thereof (adv.)

Meaning: of the thing just mentioned; of that. (उसके)

Synonyms: therewith, thereout

Sentence: Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.

  1. Infer (verb)

Meaning: deduce or conclude (information) from evidence and reasoning rather than from explicit statements. (तर्क करना)

Synonyms: deduce, reason, conclude

Sentence: What do you infer from her refusal?

  1. Tranche (noun)

Meaning: a portion of something, especially money. (अंश)

Synonyms: fraction, tiny part, bit

Antonyms: lot, plenty, loads

Sentence: They risk losing the next tranche of funding.

  1. Cavil (verb)

Meaning: make petty or unnecessary objections. (झूठा इलज़ाम)

Synonyms: complaint, carp, niggle

Antonyms: applaud, commend, compliment

Sentence: I don’t think this is the time to cavil at the wording of the report.

  1. Chary (adj.)

Meaning: cautiously or suspiciously reluctant to do something. (होशियार)

Synonyms: wary, cautious, heedful

Antonyms: careless, unmindful, heedless

Sentence: I am rather chary of making too many idiotic mistakes

  1. Nay (noun)

Meaning: a negative answer or vote. (अस्वीकार)

Synonyms: denial, refusal, negation

Antonyms: yes, positive, approval

Sentence: The daily work continued; nay, it actually increased.
