 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Appropriacy (noun)

Meaning: the quality of being suitable or proper in the circumstances. (उपयुक्तता)

Synonyms: suitable, proper, acceptable

Antonyms: inappropriate, improper, unsuitable

Sentence: Teachers aim to assess the appropriacy of the language used by their students in particular contexts.

  1. Prolix (adj.)

Meaning: (of speech or writing) using or containing too many words; tediously lengthy. (अति विस्‍तृत)

Synonyms: lengthy, long-winded, verbose

Antonyms: concise, compact, brief

Sentence: The author’s prolix style has done nothing to encourage sales of the book.

  1. Exuded (verb)

Meaning: to flow forth slowly through small openings (बहाना)

Synonyms: give off/out, discharge, release

Antonyms: gushed, poured

Sentence: A sticky resin exudes from the bark of the tree.

  1. Dossier (noun)

Meaning: a collection of documents about a particular person, event, or subject. (फ़ाइल)

Synonyms: file, report, data

Sentence: The company is compiling a dossier of evidence to back its allegations.

  1. Mutt (noun)

Meaning: a person regarded as stupid or incompetent. (मूर्ख)

Synonyms: fool, idiot, halfwit

Antonyms: genius, sage, intellect

Sentence: “Do not give me orders, mutt.”

  1. Cower (verb)

Meaning: crouch down in fear. (डर से झुक जाना)

Synonyms: grovel, quail, crouch

Sentence: Before such a leader, all enemies will cower.

  1. Consternation (noun)

Meaning: feelings of anxiety or dismay, typically at something unexpected. (चिंता)

Synonyms: dismay, perturbation, anxiety

Antonyms: comfort, consolation, relief

Sentence: The announcement created surprise and consternation.

  1. Disingenuous (adj.)

Meaning: not candid or sincere, typically by pretending that one knows less about something than one really does. (कपटी)

Synonyms: dishonest, deceitful, underhand

Antonyms: honest, sincere, genuine

Sentence: He was being somewhat disingenuous as well as cynical.

  1. Peregrination (noun)

Meaning: a journey, especially a long or meandering one. (सफ़र)

Synonyms: travels, voyages, journey

Sentence: His peregrinations took him to India.

  1. Smattering (noun)

Meaning: a slight superficial knowledge of a language or subject. (ऊपरी ज्ञान)

Synonyms: handful, few

Sentence: Edward had only a smattering of Spanish.
