 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Freight (noun)

Meaning: goods transported in bulk by truck, train, ship, or aircraft. (परिवहन)

Synonyms: cargo, consignment, haul

Sentence: France derives 16% of its revenue from air freight.

  1. Conscientious (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person) wishing to do what is right, especially to do one’s work or duty well and thoroughly. (ईमानदार)

Synonyms: diligent, industrious, punctilious

Antonyms: cutthroat, dishonest, dishonorable

Sentence: We are generally very conscientious about our work.

  1. Boulevard (noun)

Meaning: a wide street in a town or city, typically lined with trees. (मार्ग)

Synonyms: avenue, street, road

Sentence: They replaced the narrow streets with wide boulevards.

  1. Pilfer (verb)

Meaning: steal (typically things of relatively little value). (चुराना)

Synonyms: steal, thieve, rob

Antonyms: hand over, give

Sentence: He was caught pilfering from the shop.

  1. Grisly (adj.)

Meaning: causing horror or disgust. (भयानक)

Synonyms: gruesome, ghastly, frightful

Antonyms: comforting, soothing, pleasurable

  1. Repentance (noun)

Meaning: the action of repenting; sincere regret or remorse. (पछतावा)

Synonyms: remorse, contrition, contriteness

Antonyms: impenitence, remorselessness

Sentence: Confession is the first step to repentance.

  1. Jettison (verb)

Meaning: throw or drop (something) from an aircraft or ship. (बोझ गिराना)

Synonyms: discarding, disposal, dumping

Antonyms: accumulation, gathering

Sentence: Six aircraft jettisoned their loads in the sea.

  1. Elation (noun)

Meaning: great happiness and exhilaration. (उत्साह)

Synonyms: happiness, exhilaration, joy

Antonyms: misery, sadness, unhappiness

Sentence: She showed her elation at having finally achieved her ambition.

  1. Surreptitiously (adv.)

Meaning: in a way that attempts to avoid notice or attention; secretively. (चुपके)

Synonyms: furtively, secretively, sneakily

Antonyms: openly, publicly

Sentence: Joe surreptitiously had a look in the answer book.

  1. Soothsayer (noun)

Meaning: a person is supposed to be able to foresee the future. (भविष्यवक्ता)

Synonyms: forecaster, foreseer, foreteller

Sentence: He avoided driving after the soothsayer warned him about a fatal car accident.
