The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  9th November 2021

‘Vocabulary’

  1. Proclivity (noun)

Meaning: a tendency to choose or do something regularly; an inclination or predisposition toward a particular thing. (झुकाव)

Synonyms: tendency, leaning, propensity

Antonyms: aversion, disfavor, disinclination

Sentence: The child showed no proclivity towards aggression.

  1. Spruce (verb)

Meaning: make a person or place smarter or tidier. (सजाना)

Synonyms: smarten up, make smarter, tidy up

Antonyms: dirty, filthy, untidy

Sentence: The fund will be used to spruce up historic buildings.

  1. Hideous (adj.)

Meaning: ugly or disgusting to look at. (कुरूप)

Synonyms: ugly, unsightly, repulsive

Antonyms: attractive, good-looking, impressive

Sentence: His smile made him look more hideous than ever.

  1. Contagious (adj.)

Meaning: (of a disease) spread from one person or organism to another by direct or indirect contact. (संक्रामक)

Synonyms: infectious, communicable, transmittable

Antonyms: noncommunicable, noninfectious

Sentence: It’s a highly contagious infection.

  1. Ponderous (adj.)

Meaning: slow and clumsy because of great weight. (भारी-भरकम)

Synonyms: clumsy, slow, heavy

Antonyms: lightweight, fluffy

Sentence: Her footsteps were heavy and ponderous.

  1. Peevish (adj.)

Meaning: easily irritated, especially by unimportant things. (चिड़चिड़ा)

Synonyms: irritable, irascible, fractious

Antonyms: affable, companionable, cordial

Sentence: Sebastian was a sickly, peevish child.

  1. Misogynist (noun)

Meaning: a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women. (स्री जाति से द्वेष करनेवाला)

Synonyms: woman-hater, anti-feminist, male chauvinist

Antonyms: feminist, optimist, idealist

Sentence: She felt she was struggling against thinly disguised misogyny.

  1. Overt (adj.)

Meaning: done or shown openly; plainly or readily apparent, not secret or hidden. (अपरोक्ष)

Synonyms: undisguised, unconcealed, clear

Antonyms: unapparent, unclarified, unclear

Sentence: His opponent’s intention is quite overt.

  1. Staid (adj.)

Meaning: sedate, respectable, and unadventurous. (शांत)

Synonyms: sedate, respectable, quiet

Antonyms: joking, kittenish, ludic

Sentence: He had grown staid and dull.

  1. Putrefy (verb)

Meaning: (of a body or other organic matter) decay or rot and produce a fetid smell. (सड़ना)

Synonyms: decay, rot, decompose

Antonyms: develop, grow, mature

Sentence: The body was beginning to putrefy.
