‘Vocabulary’
- Elusive (adj.)
Meaning: difficult to find, catch, or achieve. (हाथ न आनेवाला)
Synonyms: difficult to catch, evasive, slippery
Antonyms: accessible, approachable, attainable
Sentence: Success will become ever more elusive.
- Contumacious (adj.)
Meaning: (especially of a defendant’s behavior) stubbornly or willfully disobedient to authority. (अवज्ञाकारी)
Synonyms: contrary, defiant, disobedient
Antonyms: amenable, biddable, obedient
Sentence: His refusal to make child support payments was contumacious.
- Bizarre (adj.)
Meaning: very strange or unusual, especially so as to cause interest or amusement. (विचित्र)
Synonyms: strange, peculiar, odd
Antonyms: common, average, ordinary
Sentence: He gave a bizarre excuse for getting home so late.
- Batter (verb)
Meaning: strike repeatedly with hard blows. (मारना)
Synonyms: pummel, pound, beat up
Antonyms: heal, aid, fix
Sentence: He was battered and falsely imprisoned by the officers.
- Instigate (verb)
Meaning: bring about or initiate (an action or event). (भड़काना)
Synonyms: set in motion, put in motion, initiate
Antonyms: calm, soothe, subdue
Sentence: They instigated a reign of terror.
- Slay (verb)
Meaning: kill (a person or animal) in a violent way. (मार डालना)
Synonyms: kill, murder, put to death
Antonyms: animate, resuscitate, revive
Sentence: St. George slew the dragon.
- Fling (verb)
Meaning: throw or hurl forcefully. (फेंकना)
Synonyms: throw, toss, sling
Antonyms: hold, keep, retain
Sentence: He picked up the debris and flung it away.
- Trifle (noun)
Meaning: a thing of little value or importance. (छोटी सी)
Synonyms: trivial thing, unimportant thing, nothing
Antonyms: importance, lot
Sentence: We needn’t trouble the headmaster over such trifles.
- Amicable (adj.)
Meaning: (of relations between people) having a spirit of friendliness; without serious disagreement or rancor. (मैत्रीपूर्ण)
Synonyms: friendly, good-natured, cordial
Antonyms: disagreeable, discordant, incompatible
Sentence: There will be an amicable settlement of the dispute.
- Acquiesce (verb)
Meaning: accept something reluctantly but without protest. (संतुष्ट होना)
Synonyms: permit, consent to, agree to
Antonyms: dissent, refuse, reject
Sentence: Apparently, the contractor expected me to acquiesce to my own fleecing.
