The World Bank released “water for shared prosperity” report

The World Bank has recently released the water for shared prosperity report on the global water crisis. It has released this report at the 10th World water Forum which was scheduled to be held in Bali,Indonesia.

Highlights of the report:

• As per the report, around 2.2 billion people are not able to safely drink water and around 3.5 billion people lack access to safe sanitation as of 2022.
• If we talk about rural areas, the situation is worse as eight out of ten people can’t access basic drinking water and sanitation services.
• China and India, two most populous countries( together contribute 36% of global population) have only 11% of fresh water. Disparity in fresh water distribution can be easily seen around the globe as North America, which contributes only 5 percent of global population, holds 52 percent of freshwater globally.
• Climate change is intensifying the water stress more. Developing countries are especially witnessing more severe and prolonged drought and floods situations.
• There are around 800 million people who live at high risk of drought.
• Some more affected areas will be Central Europe, Asia, the Horn of Africa, India, North America, Amazonia, and central Australia.
• As solutions, we need to invest in better management, development,and allocation of water resources.

World Water Forum:

The tenth edition of the World water Forum was held in Bali, Indonesia. The theme for WWF 2024 was water for shared prosperity. The World water Forum 2024 was organized by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the World Water Council.

Conclusion:

Addressing the water crisis requires coordinated efforts at local, national, and international levels to ensure sustainable water management and equitable access to water resources.

Sustainable water management practices, such as water conservation and improved infrastructure, are crucial for addressing the water crisis in the long term.
