Why Farmers are worried on average monsoon?

Since the start of the season on June, India has got average monsoon rains, despite concerns that an El Nino weather pattern could lead to lower rainfall this year.

For Indian farmers average monsoon rains are generally beneficial but this year’s uneven distribution of rain has created new challenges and worries.

Uneven distribution:

In India there are some northern and north-western states which have got excessive rains but there are still other part of country such as southern and eastern regions have been unusually dry.

If we talk about data, India Meteorological Department (IMD) has release its data which shows only one third of the country has got average rainfall so far this season. Around 34% of India has received less rains and 32% excessive rainfall.

State wise distribution:

There are many states which have received double their normal rainfall such as Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

While, there are many states which have got less rainfall than normal such as Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Kerala.

The most affected crops:

Rice, vegetables and pulses are much affected adversely by the uneven rainfall distribution.

Paddy fields in northern states have been inundated for over a week and this situation is destroying newly planted seedlings, and forcing farmers to wait for waters.

In other major rice-growing states such as West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh etc. farmers have prepared paddy nurseries but have been unable to transplant the seedlings due to inadequate rainfall.

Uneven rainfall distribution has also affected some vegetables like tomatoes, eggplant, capsicum and spinach.

Due to flood like situation in northern India standing crops have been damaged. This situation results in higher prices of certain vegetables including tomatoes have hit record highs.

Impact on winter-sown crops:

Delays in planting summer crops lead to delays in harvesting, ultimately resulting in the late sowing of winter crops such as wheat, rapeseed and chickpeas.

Cold weather is essential for winter crops. There is a higher temperature in some last years during the maturity phase which has resulted in yield losses.
