Every year 15th March is celebrated as World Consumer Rights Day to raise global awareness about consumer rights and promote consumer protection. History:

The World Consumer Rights Day was inspired by then US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

The World Consumer Rights Day was celebrated in 1983 first time.

Consumer rights in India:

The consumer protection act had been passed on December 9, 1986 in the Indian Parliament to empower the consumers.

The act permits the establishment of consumer councils, forums and appellate courts for the settlement of consumer’s grievances.

Rights given to consumer in India:

  • Right is heard at an appropriate forum
  • Right is eligible to be redressal in case of unfair trade practices
  • Right to consumer education
  • Right to get goods and services at competitive prices and reliable sources
  • Right to get information about the quality, potency, purity, standard and price of goods and services
  • Right against the protection about wrong marketing of goods and services which are hazardous to the life and property
