December 10 is observed as Human Rights Day every year. A person who lives on Earth has a basic right which he/she must be aware of. Human Rights day is observed on 10th December since the 1948 year. The United Nations and Government of particular member country bring a huge role in educating people about their Basic rights.
History and significance:
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) has been adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a very important document that glorifies rights that everyone is entitled to, as a human being, regardless of their race, colour, religion, sex, language, political, national, origin and birth.
This Declaration is translated in more than 500 languages which is the most translated document in the world. In the absence of human dignity, world cannot hope to drive sustainable development therefore Human rights are at the heart of Sustainable Development Goals.
The UN believes that December 10 is a chance to recheck the importance of human rights in re-building the world we want to live in.
HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 2021: THEME
The theme of Human Rights Day 2021: Equality, Reducing inequalities and advancing human rights. This year’s theme is related to ‘Equality’ and UDHR’s Article 1 which tells ‘All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.’
The UN approach set out in the document includes addressing and finding solutions for discrimination that have affected several people in society.
Why HRD is observed on 10 December?
December 10 every year is observed as International Human Rights Day because on 10 December 1996, South African President Nelson Mandela has signed into law a new constitution for South Africa. The new constitution legally- instituted racial equality and charged social policy to history. The location where the constitution was signed was significant and symbolic of the betrayal and brutality of past governments.
