Independence Day is annually celebrated on 15 August, as a national holiday in India commemorating the nation’s independence from the British rule on 15 August 1947.

First Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi.

History

European traders had established outposts in the Indian subcontinent by the 17th century. Through overwhelming military strength, the British East India company subdued local kingdoms and established themselves as the dominant force by the 18th century.

Highlights of the PM Modi’s Independence Day speech at Red Fort:

• Vishwakarma Yojana: PM Modi revealed the initiation of the Vishwakarma Yojana, earmarking an initial allocation of ₹13,000 to ₹15,000 crore in September. The scheme aims to benefit individuals possessing traditional skills. The scheme was announced in the Budget 2023.
• Women-Led Development: The central government will take major steps for women-led development. He said, ” India has the most number of women pilots, we are empowering 10,000 women SHGs…after ‘Bank wali Didi’, ‘Dawai Wali Didi’ we are working on ‘Lakhpati Didi….”
• Developed India By 2047: PM Modi urgent citizens for support and blessings. He said,” It’s the time we need to be serious towards our contribution. In 2047, India should celebrate the 100th anniversary of Independence Day as a developed nation. With transparency and holiness, we can surely become a developed nation… we need to fight three obstacles, corruption, familism and appeasement will all our hearts and soul…”
