Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules 2011 has been amended by the central government by making announcement of maximum retail price (MRP) in Indian currency inclusive of all duties & taxes on pre packed commodities with mandatory of its date of manufacturing. The amendments will applicatble from 1st April, 2022.

The Department of Consumer Affairs under Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has excluded the Rule 5 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities), Rules 2011 determining the Schedule II ordering the pack sizes of various types of commodities to safeguard interest of consumers.

What are the changes in the amendment?

A new provision has been brought in to point the unit sale price on pre packed commodities, which can accord easier comparison of amount of the commodities at the time of purchase.

The provisions of declarations of MRP has been modified by removing illustration and providing for making the mandatory declaration of MRP in Indian currency inclusive of all taxes. This has permitted the manufacturer, packer and importer to declare the MRP on the pre packed commodities in a simplified manner.

Earlier such declarations might be denoted as ‘N’ or ‘U’ only. Now the quantities are often showed in terms of the number or unit or piece or pair or set or such other word which represents the number of the package. This will remove the monopoly of declaration of quantity sold by number in pre packed commodities.
