India slips 12 spots to 55th position in Global Home Price Index

• India has moved down 12 spots in the global home price index to 55th rank in Q1 2021 against 43rd rank in Q1 2020, with a decline of 1.6 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in home prices, Knight Frank, in its latest research report “Global House Price Index” – Q1 2021.
• Global Home Price Index is prepared by the London-based Knight Frank, which monitors housing prices in 56 countries. Turkey continues to lead the annual rankings with prices up by 32 per cent YoY, followed by New Zealand.

Policybazaar gets insurance broking licence

• Policybazaar said it has got approval from regulator IRDAI to undertake insurance broking, a development that will help the company augment business and expand bouquet of services.
• With this development, the company will surrender its web aggregator licence to Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and undertake business including insurance aggregation under the broking umbrella.

ADB, India sign $484 million loan to upgrade road network in Tamil Nadu industrial corridor

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India signed a $484 million loan to improve transport connectivity and facilitate industrial development in the Chennai–Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor (CKIC) in the state of Tamil Nadu.
• “The project is key to providing seamless road connectivity across industrial clusters, transport gateways and consumption centers, and help reduce logistics and production costs for CKIC’s targeted industries to boost their competitiveness.

• $300 million – Upgrade power distribution network in Uttar Pradesh
• 2100 Cr.- Tripura for urban, tourism development
• $231 million- enhance power generation capacity in Assam
• $300 million –Upgrade the power distribution system in Bengaluru city.

Mukesh Sharma appointed honorary member of WHO’s Technical Advisory Group

• Mukesh Sharma, a faculty at IIT Kanpur, has been appointed as an honorary member of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Global Air Pollution and Health – Technical Advisory Group (GAPH-TAG).
• Members of the Technical Advisory Group are selected across the globe and appointed by the Director-General, WHO. Sharma, associated with the civil engineering department at IIT Kanpur and an air quality expert, has melded rigorous research with policy engagement.

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat clinched gold medal in Poland open

• Asian champion and star wrestler Vinesh Phogat  clinched gold in the 53kg category at the Poland Open.
• The Indian wrestler was in top-notch form during the game as she defeated Khrystyna Bereza of Ukraine 8-0 in Final.

June 16: Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev

• Guru Arjan Dev was the first of the two Gurus martyred in the Sikh faith. He was the fifth Guru of the Sikhs. According to the Hindu calendar, Guru Arjan Dev Martyrdom Day is observed on Jeth Sudi 4 and this year it is being observed 14 June.
• Born in 1563 in Goindval of Tarn Taran district, Guru Arjan Dev was martyred on 16 June, 1606. People belonging to the Sikh community observe this occasion as Chabeel Day in his remembrance.

16 June: International Day of Family Remittances

• The International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly and is observed on 16 June.
• This day further highlights the great resilience of migrant workers in the face of economic insecurities, natural and climate-related disasters and a global pandemic. The first International Day of Family Remittances was celebrated on June 16, 2015.

Veteran actor Chandrashekhar Passed away

• Veteran Bollywood actor Chandrashekhar has died at the age of 97.
• The veteran actor has done over 250 films and numerous TV shows in his long career. Starting his career as a junior artist, he went on to emerge as a prominent character actor. He acted in ‘Surang’ as a lead actor (1953) and went on to do ‘Mastana’ (1954), ‘Basant Bahaar’ (1956), ‘Kaali Topi Laal Rumaal’ (1959), ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’ (1960), ‘Rustom-e-Baghdad’ (1963) and ‘Kanyadaan’ (1968), among numerous other films. His performance as Arya Sumanta in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic TV show Ramayan is also memorable. His last film was ‘Khauff’ (2000).
