India, China, Pakistan expanding their nuclear arsenals: SIPRI

• China, Pakistan and India have 350, 165 and 156 nuclear warheads respectively as of January this year and the three countries appear to be expanding their nuclear arsenals, a study by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has said.
• It also said as per its assessment, Russia and the US together possess over 90 percent of the estimated 13,080 global nuclear weapons.
• There are nine countries in the world that have nuclear weapons: the US, Russia, the UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea.

PM Modi Virtually Addresses 5th edition of VivaTech in Paris

• Prime Minister,  Narendra Modi virtually addressed the 5th edition of VivaTech. VivaTech is one of the largest digital and startup events of Europe, held in Paris every year since 2016.
• PM Modi was invited as a Guest of Honour to deliver the keynote address at VivaTech 2021, which has been organised from 16-19 June 2021 in Paris. During his address, PM Modi invited the world to invest in India based on the five pillars: Talent, Market, Capital, Eco-system and, Culture of openness.

Canara Bank to be lead sponsor of bad bank, to pick up 12% stake

• State-owned Canara Bank  said it will be the lead sponsor of National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (NARCL) or bad bank with 12 per cent stake in the entity.
• Bad bank refers to a financial institution that takes over bad assets of lenders and undertakes resolution. “The Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), vide their letter dated May 13, 2021 requested Canara Bank to participate in NARCL as sponsor. The board of Canara Bank has given in-principle approval for taking stake in NARCL.
• The proposed NARCL would be 51% promoted by PSBs and remaining by private sector lender. Banks have identified around 22 bad loans worth Rs 89,000 crore to be transferred to the NARCL in the initial phase.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Named as Chairman, Succeeds John Thompson

• Microsoft on 16th June named Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella as its new chairman, in place of John Thompson.
• Nadella, who took over as CEO in 2014 from Steve Ballmer, has been instrumental in scaling up its business including billion-dollar acquisitions like LinkedIn, Nuance Communications, and ZeniMax.
• The company said Thompson, who took over as chairman from the software giant’s co-founder Bill Gates in 2014, will serve as lead independent director.

Defence Minister Approves Budgetary Support of Rs 499 cr for innovations

• Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the budgetary support of Rs 498.8 crore for iDEX-DIO (Innovations for Defence Excellence – Defence Innovation Organisation) for the next five years.
• The funds will be used to provide financial support to nearly 300 start-ups, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and individual innovators with a larger goal of ensuring self-reliance in the defence sector.

June 17: World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

•  Every year on June 17, World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought 2021 is observed to raise awareness that the world is at an alarming stage and the issue is increasing at a fast pace due to various activities carried out by humans. This day was initiated by United Nations to highlight the various methods to prevent desertification.
• The United Nations, on its website marking the occasion, stated that restoring degraded land brings economic resilience, creates jobs, raises incomes, and increases food security.

Actor-cinematographer Shaman Mithru passes away

• Actor-cinematographer Shaman Mithru passed away in Chennai on 17th June due to Covid-19 complications. He was 43.
• Shaman, who worked on several projects as a Director of Photography (DOP), made his acting debut with 2019 film Thorati.
