Meenakashi Lekhi leads Indian delegation at G20 Culture Ministers’ Meeting

  • Meenakashi Lekhi, the Minister of State for Culture of India participated in the G20 Culture Ministers’ Meeting on behalf of the Government of India.
  • The two-day meeting was hosted by Italy on July 29 and 30 July 2021, during their ongoing Presidency of G20 in 2021.

India takes over UNSC presidency for August 2021

  • India took over from France to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of August 2021.
  • This is the first presidency for India during its 2021-22 tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the first Indian PM to preside over a meeting of the UNSC.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be launching e-RUPI on August 2. The electronic voucher-based digital payment system has been developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on its UPI platform.
  • E-Rupee: E-Rupee is a cashless and contactless means of digital payment. It is a QR code or SMS string-based e-voucher, which is delivered to the mobile of the beneficiaries. With the help of e-RUPI payment service, a user will be able to redeem the voucher without a card, digital payments app, or internet banking access.

Deepak Das appointed as new Controller General of Accounts

  • Deepak Das has taken over as the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) on August 01, 2021. Prior to assuming charge of CGA, Mr Das served as the Principal Chief Controller of Accounts in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
  • 25th officer to hold the position of CGA. CGA is the account keeper of the government and derives its mandate from Article 150 of the Constitution.

  • The founder of the Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune, businessman Cyrus Poonawalla has been named the winner of the prestigious National Lokmanya Tilak Award 2021.
  • He will be commended for his work during the COVID-19 pandemic and how his company helped save many lives by creating the Covishield vaccine and then making provided the medicine to the citizens of the country at an affordable price.

Vice Admiral SN Ghormade appointed New Vice Chief of the Naval Staff

  • Vice Admiral S.N. Ghormade took over as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff from Vice Admiral G Ashok Kumar on 31st July, who retired after 39 years of service.
  • Vice-Admiral Ghormade was appointed to the Navy on January 1, 1984 and is an expert in navigation and direction specialist. He was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) by the President in 2017 and the Nausena Medal in 2007 by commendation of then Chief of the Naval Staff.

  • Esteban Ocon, Alpine-Renault/ France, has won the Hungarian Grand Prix 2021, held on August 01, 2021, at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród, Hungary. This is the maiden F1 race win for Esteban Ocon.
  • Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin-Mercedes/Germany) came second. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes-Great Britain) finished third.

ISRO-NASA joint mission NISAR Satellite to be launched in 2023

  • The ISRO-NASA Joint Mission NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite, which aims to measure changes in the earth’s surface globally using advanced radar images, is scheduled to be launched in early 2023.
  • The main scientific goal of this mission is to improve understanding of the effects of climate change on the planet’s changing ecosystems, terrestrial and coastal processes, land deformation, and the cryosphere. NISAR is one of the important cooperation projects between ISRO and NASA.

  • The National Mountain Climbing Day is observed annually on August 1. Mountains have major geographical significance in our day-to-day lives.
  • They are responsible for defining the natural borders of nations and landscapes. People who admire these elevated features often go hiking or climbing, sometimes at the risk of their lives.
  • The day was established in order to honour Bobby Matthews and his friend Josh Madigan, for successfully climbing the 46th peak of New York State’s Adirondack Mountains.
