The project aims to strengthen grassroots biodiversity governance by integrating conservation into Gram Panchayat Development Plans and empowering local communities with innovative financing mechanisms.

It will be implemented in Tamil Nadu (Sathyamangalam & Mudumalai Tiger Reserves) and Meghalaya (Garo Hills, including Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, Balpakram National Park, Siju Wildlife Sanctuary), aligning with India’s biodiversity and climate goals.

UNESCO has added 12 new sites to its Global Geoparks Network, strengthening efforts to protect geological heritage and promote sustainable development.

The newly designated geoparks are spread across countries like China, France, Greece, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, Portugal, Russia, Tunisia, and Uruguay, highlighting global participation.

With this expansion, the total number of UNESCO Global Geoparks has reached 241 sites in 51 countries, covering over 882,000 sq km worldwide.

The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, inaugurated an X-band Doppler Weather Radar at Mahabaleshwar under Mission Mausam to enhance weather monitoring.

Installed at about 1,400 metres in the Western Ghats, the radar can track rainfall, storms, fog, and winds in real time, improving short-term weather forecasts (up to 3 hours) for regions like Pune, Mumbai, Konkan, and Satara.

IITM also signed an MoU with ISRO’s Space Applications Centre (SAC) to develop advanced satellite-based weather products, aiding disaster management, agriculture, aviation safety, and climate studies.
