46th edition of Wangala Festival concluded in Meghalaya

  • The 46th edition of Wangala Festival, also known as the 100 Drums Festival and one of Meghalaya’s most famous post-harvest carnivals, concluded at Wangala Dam Chibragre near Tura in West Garo Hills district, Meghalaya.
  • The 3-day post-harvest festival was organized by the Hundred Drums Wangala Festival Committee.
  • Over ten dancing contingents from across the Garo Hills take part in the festival. The festival is also held in the neighbouring tribal-dominated areas of Bangladesh.
  • Wangala Festival is a harvest festival held in honour of Saljong, the Sun-god of fertility.
  • The celebration of the Wangala Festival marks the end of a period of toil, which brings good output of the fields. It also signifies the onset of winter.

Climate Change Performance Index 2023: India ranked 8th

  • India has climbed two spots to bag the eighth position out of 63 in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2023.
  • In 2022 & 2021, India stood at the 10th spot, while in 2020 it ranked 9th.
  • The report leaves the first three places empty as “no country performed well enough in all index categories to achieve an overall very high rating”. It puts Denmark in fourth place, followed by Sweden and Chile.
  • China, which is the world’s biggest polluter now, fell 13 places to 51st in this year’s CCPI and received an overall very-low rating due to plans for new coal-fired power plants.
  • The US rose by three ranks to 52nd place. Iran (63rd), Saudi Arabia (62nd), and Kazakhstan (61st) fared the worst.
  • The report was published by three environmental non-governmental organizations that track the climate performance of the European Union and 59 countries, which together account for over 92 percent of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the world.
  • The rankings by Germanwatch, New Climate Institute and the Climate Action Network are based on how well the countries are doing to halve their emissions by 2030.

India set to become world’s most populous country in 2023: UN report

  • As per the United Nations ‘World Population Prospects 2022’ report, India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023.
  • This is because fertility rates in China have declined considerably in past years, with the country expected to see an absolute decline in population numbers as early as 2023.
  • By 2050, India is expected to have a population of 1.668 billion while China’s population will decline to 1.317 billion.
  • According to the report, the world’s population crossed the 8 billion mark by November 15. By 2050, Earth will be host to 9.7 billion humans.
  • About half of the increase in population from the present day to 2050 will be contributed by just 8 countries, including India.
  • The world’s population will hit 10.4 billion by the 2080s and will stabilize around that number by the end of the century.

India’s exports dip 17% to $29.78 billion in October 2022

  • India’s exports contracted by 16.65 percent to $29.78 billion in October 2022 as compared to the year-ago period, according to data released by the commerce ministry
  • Imports during the month under review increased to USD 56.69 billion as against USD 53.64 billion in October 2021.
  • During April-October 2022, exports recorded a growth of 12.55 percent to USD 263.35 billion. Imports rose 33.12 percent to USD 436.81 billion, as per the data.

Retail inflation eased to 6.77% in October 2022

  • India’s retail inflation, based on the consumer price index (CPI), eased sharply to 6.77 percent on an annual basis in the month of October from 7.41 percent in September 2022.
  • The number has remained above RBI’s tolerance band of 2-6 percent for the 10th consecutive month
  • The government has mandated the RBI to maintain retail inflation at 4% with a margin of 2%.
  • As per the Ministry of Statistics data released, retail inflation came down mainly with ease in prices of Food & Beverages.
  • Food inflation for October came in at 7.01 percent as against 8.6 percent a month before.
  • The inflation rate for vegetables came in at 7.7 percent. Meanwhile, fuel and light inflation declined to 9.93 percent compared to 10.39 percent in September.

  • The Union Government has appointed Financial Services Secretary Vivek Joshi as a director on the central board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • The Central Government has nominated Vivek Joshi as a Director on the Central Board of Reserve Bank of India vice Sanjay Malhotra.
  • The board is primarily responsible for the oversight of the central bank.
  • The board has 15 seats, of which five are official directors and 10 are non-official directors.
  • RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das is the chief executive of the board.

India-US joint military exercise ‘Yudh Abhyas’ to start in Uttrakhand

  • The 18th edition of the India-US joint training exercise “Yudh Abhyas 22″ is scheduled to be conducted in
  • The drill is conducted annually between India and the USA with the aim of exchanging best practices, tactics, techniques, and procedures between the armies of the two countries.
  • US Army soldiers from the 2nd Brigade of the 11th Airborne Division and Indian Army soldiers from the ASSAM Regiment will be participating in the exercise.
  • The previous edition of the exercise was conducted at Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson, Alaska in October 2021.

  • India participated in 26th International Malabar Naval Exercise, organized in Yokosuka of Japan.
  • The first edition of the India-Mozambique-Tanzania Trilateral Exercise (IMT TRILAT) concluded at Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
  • Indian Air Force (IAF) and French Air and Space Force (FASF) are participating in a bilateral exercise named ‘Garuda’ at Air Force Station Jodhpur.
  • The Indian Navy hosted the 29th edition of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) at Visakhapatnam.
  • The Indian and US militaries carried out a three-day joint humanitarian assistance exercise ‘Tiger Triumph’ in Visakhapatnam.

3rd edition of coastal defence exercise ‘Sea Vigil’ concluded

  • The 3rd edition of the ‘Pan-India’ Coastal Defence Exercise ‘Sea Vigil-22’ has concluded.
  • This National Level Coastal Defence Exercise was conceptualized in 2018 to validate various measures that have been instituted towards enhancing maritime security since ‘26/11’.
  • The exercise was undertaken along the entire 7516 km coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone of India and involved all the Coastal States and Union territories along with other maritime stakeholders, including the fishing and coastal communities.
  • The exercise is being conducted by the Indian Navy in coordination with the Coast Guard and other ministries entrusted with the task of maritime activities.

  • NATO has begun its long-planned annual nuclear exercise “Steadfast Noon” in northwestern Europe.
  • The Indian Navy has conducted a security exercise, called “Prasthan”, in the Offshore Development Area (ODA) off Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
  • INS Tarkash has participated in the 7th edition of IBSAMAR, a joint multinational maritime exercise among Indian, Brazilian and South African Navies
  • INS Satpura and P81 Maritime Patrol Aircraft reached Darwin in Australia to participate in the Multinational Naval Exercise ‘Kakadu’.
  • The 6th edition of Japan India Maritime Exercise 2022 (JIMEX 22) hosted by the Indian Navy began in the Bay of Bengal.

  • Mercedes’ George Russell has won his maiden F1 race in Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo.
  • Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton & Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz came at the second and third positions respectively.
  • With Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finishing fourth.
  • It was also Mercedes’ maiden win in the F1 2022 season.

  • Switzerland‘s women’s tennis team has won the Billie Jean King Cup for the 1st time by defeating 7-time champion Australia in Glasgow, Scotland.
  • Billie Jean King Cup 2022 was the 59th edition of the international women’s tennis tournament & was held in Scotland.
  • Seven-times winners Australia, looking for their first title since 1974, had also missed out in 2019, when they were beaten by France in Perth.
  • The teams also clashed in the semi-finals of last year’s event in Prague, where Teichmann overcame Sanders and Bencic defeated Tomljanovic before Switzerland went on to finish runners-up to Russia.
  • The championship is named after Billie Jean King, an American former world No. 1 tennis player.
