Madhya Pradesh cabinet approves ‘Mukhya Mantri Sikho Kamao Yojana’ for unemployed youth

- The Madhya Pradesh state cabinet has given its approval to a new scheme called ‘Mukhyamantri Sikho Kamao Yojana’ (Chief Minister Learn and Earn Scheme), aimed at providing opportunities for unemployed youth in the state.
- Under the ‘Mukhyamantri Sikho Kamao Yojana,’ the government plans to offer training in around 700 different types of work across various sectors.
- These sectors include engineering, hotel management, tourism, travel, hospital services, ITI, software development, banking, insurance, accounting, chartered accountancy, financial services, industries, and the MSME industry.
- The wide range of options allows the youth to choose fields aligned with their interests and aptitudes.
- All the youth who have done 12th pass, ITI, Diploma, Graduation and Post Graduation will be eligible for this scheme.
- After the training, the State Council for Vocational Training (SCVT) certificate will be given by the Madhya Pradesh State Skill Development and Employment Generation Board (MPSSDEGB).
- Prestigious industrial and private institutions of the country and the state will be connected with the scheme.
- Establishments will be able to train student trainees up to 15 percent of their total workforce.
- Under the scheme, 12th passed trainees will be given 8 thousand rupees, ITI passed 8 thousand 500 rupees, diploma passed 9 thousand rupees and graduate passed or higher educational qualification will be given 10 thousand rupees per month stipend.

2nd Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group meet to be held in Mumbai
- The second meeting of the G-20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRWG) will be held in Mumbai, Maharashtra from May 23 to 25.
- The three-day event, scheduled from May 23-25, aims to discuss key priority areas such as early warning systems, resilient infrastructure, national and international response, building back better, and nature-based solutions.
- The decision to host the DRRWG meeting in Mumbai, a city familiar with heavy rainfall challenges, highlights India’s commitment to disaster risk reduction.
- The catastrophic floods in July 2005 serve as a constant reminder of the need to bolster preparedness and implement effective measures.
- The first DRRWG meeting was held in Gandhinagar in March-April 2023.

PM Modi launches Railway Projects & Flags off Vande Bharat Express
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone and dedicate several railway projects worth over 8,000 crore rupees in Odisha via video conferencing
- During the event, Modi flagged off the Vande Bharat Express between Puri and Howrah.
- The train will cover 500 kms distance and pass through Khordha, Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Balasore districts in Odisha and Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur districts in West Bengal.
- The train will provide a faster, comfortable and convenient travel experience to the rail users, boost tourism and promote economic development in the region.
- Modi also dedicated 100% electrification of the rail network in Odisha.

TN CM Stalin inaugurates India’s longest Skywalk Bridge

- Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has inaugurated a 570-meter long and 4.2-meter-wide skywalk bridge connecting the Mambalam railway station and T Nagar bus terminus.
- The multi-modal project connects the railway station and bus stand. It will help pedestrians.
- The bridge was constructed by the Greater Chennai Corporation at a cost of Rs 28.45 crore from Smart City funds.

MP’s Bhopal becomes first city in India to measure SDG progress
- Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal has become the first city in India to accept the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- MP’s capital city will now have voluntary local reviews (VLR) to demonstrate local government’s capacity and commitments.
- The SDGs localization is translating the agenda, transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (known as Agenda 2030), into local actions and impacts that contribute to the global achievement of the goals.
- VLRs have emerged as a powerful tool that forefronts local action. New York City became the first city to present its VLR to the HLPF in 2018. By 2021, some 33 countries had made 114 VLRs or similar review documents publicly available.

NTPC Green ties up with HPCL Mittal Energy for green hydrogen
- State-owned power giant NTPC’s arm NTPC Green Energy Ltd has signed an MoU with HPCL Mittal Energy Ltd to collaborate in renewable energy and generation of green hydrogen.
- The two companies will work together to source 250 MW of renewable energy power for HPCL Mittal Energy.
- NTPC is India’s largest power utility firm, having a core business of power generation with a total installed capacity of 72 GW (including JVs and subsidiaries).
- HMEL is a joint venture between HPCL and Mittal Energy Investments Pvt Ltd, which is an integrated refining and petrochemical company in India.
- It is engaged in the business of superior petroleum and petrochemical products and operates the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery (GGSR) with 11.3 MMTPA capacity at Bathinda, Punjab.

Chile’s 5000-year-old ‘Great Grandfather’ tree declared world’s oldest
- A 5,000-year-old tree in Chile has been officially recognized as the world’s oldest.
- The tree, a Patagonian cypress, is located in the Alerce Costero National Park and is nicknamed “Great Grandfather.”
- It is estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,500 years old, making it the oldest living organism on Earth.
- The Great Grandfather tree is a massive specimen, measuring 28 meters tall and 4 meters (13 Feet) in diameter.
- It is believed to have survived several major climate changes over the centuries, including the Little Ice Age. The tree is also a popular tourist destination, with thousands of visitors coming to see it each year.

RBI withdrawal 2000 notes from circulation, to remain legal tender

- The Reserve Bank of India has decided to withdraw the ₹2000 denomination banknotes from circulation but they will continue to remain as legal tender.
- It has advised banks to stop issuing ₹2000 denomination banknotes with immediate effect.
- The ₹2000 denomination banknote was introduced in November 2016 under Section 24(1) of RBI Act, 1934.
- Primarily to meet the currency requirement of the economy in an expeditious manner after the withdrawal of legal tender status of all ₹500 and ₹1000 banknotes in circulation at that time.
- ₹2000 currency note will remain legal tender after 30th September too. RBI expects that 4-month time is enough for people to exchange notes with the banks.
- Most of the ₹2000 notes that are in circulation will return to banks within the given time frame of 30th September.
- The objective of introducing ₹2000 banknotes was met once banknotes in other denominations became available in adequate quantities.

Siddaramaiah took oath as Karnataka Chief Minister

- Senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah took oath as Karnataka Chief Minister at the Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.
- While DK Shivakumar has also sworn in as Karnataka’s deputy CM.
- Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of office and secrecy to both leaders at the swearing-in ceremony.
- Dr G Parameshwara, KH Muniyappa, KJ George, and MB Patil also took oath as cabinet ministers in the newly-elected Karnataka Government.
- The 75-year-old Siddaramaiah become the Chief Minister for the second term after his earlier five-year stint from 2013; while 61-year-old Shivakumar, who had earlier worked as Minister under Siddaramaiah, will also continue as the party’s Karnataka state president till Parliamentary elections next year.

Jyothi Yarraji clinches gold in women’s 100 m hurdles
- Athlete Jyothi Yarraji won a gold medal in the women’s 100 m hurdles at the Federation Cup athletics event at the Birsa Munda Stadium in Ranchi.
- Yarraji, representing Andhra Pradesh, had set a meet record (13.18 secs) in the heats of women’s 100m hurdles.
- She further improved the meet record to 12.89 seconds on her way to winning gold.
- She also bettered the qualification standard of 13.63 seconds set by the Athletics Federation of India, for the Asian Championships to be held in Bangkok from July 12-16.

Ruskin Bond wrote a new book titled ‘The Golden Years’

- Indian author Ruskin Bond wrote a book titled “The Golden Years: The Many Joys of Living a Good Long Life”.
- The Golden Years book is published by HarperCollins India and released on 19 May 2023, Bond’s 89th birthday.
- The Golden Years” focuses on Bond’s experiences during the 60s, 70s and 80s.
- He was just 17 when his first novel The Room on the Roof was published. It went on to win the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize in 1957.
- Since then, he has won numerous awards including the Sahitya Akademi award in 1992, the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2014.
