Amit Shah chairs 26th meeting of Western Zonal Council in Gandhinagar

  • Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah has chaired the 26th meeting of the Western Zonal Council at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
  • The meeting was organized by the Inter-State Council Secretariat under the Ministry of Home Affairs in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat.
  • Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel, Goa CM Pramod Sawant, and administrator of UT of Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman, Diu Praful Patel attended the Meeting along with senior officials from state and Central Government.
  • During the meeting, Amit Shah also inaugurated an e-resource web portal, of the Inter-State Council Secretariat. This Portal contains minutes & agendas of various meetings of the Inter-State Council, 5 Zonal Councils & their Standing Committees since their inception.
  • The Western Zonal Council comprises the states of Gujarat, Goa, and Maharashtra, and the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu.

India hand over B20 presidency to Brazil to host G20 in 2024

  • India has handed over the B20 presidency to Brazil to host G20 in 2024.
  • B20 India Chair N Chandrasekaran said that India’s B20 Presidency under its G20 Presidency worked under the theme of Vasaudeva Katumbakam (One Earth, One Family, One Future).
  • Worked on 9 themes which included the empowerment of women and youth, the transition towards an Artificial Intelligence world, building a global resilient supply chain, and financing for the global economic recovery.

Sri Lanka hosts first Karnataka cultural festival

  • Sri Lanka hosted its very first Karnataka cultural festival.
  • It was organized by the International Cultural Council of India in collaboration with Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre and M.E Global Peace Foundation.
  • The event showcased a mesmerizing lineup of performances by over 30 artists from Karnataka including dances, folk songs, multi-lingual poems, ballet, and captivating puppet shows.
  • The programme featured the essence of Karnataka’s heritage, with the spotlight on talented artists like Madhuri Bondre and her troupe.
  • The event celebrated cultural diversity and marked a significant moment in the shared cultural heritage of India and Sri Lanka.

Airtel Payments Bank partnered with Frontier Markets to support 1 lakh women

  • Airtel Payments Bank, Frontier Markets and the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth have launched ‘She Leads Bharat: Udyam’, an initiative to elevate 1,00,000 women-owned small businesses with resources, tools and opportunities to grow and diversify their incomes.
  • She Leads Bharat: Udyam is a first-of-its-kind initiative that brings together the private sector, social enterprise, and philanthropy in the banking, financial services, and insurance sector to demonstrate a digital-first model designed to unlock ways for women-owned small businesses to increase their incomes.
  • This initiative will be funded by the Mastercard Impact Fund, while Mastercard will bring the catalytic capital and global expertise of its Center for Inclusive Growth to unlock tools, resources, and networks for women-owned small businesses.
  • In this first phase, the initiative will enable 1,00,000 women-owned small businesses in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh to learn and earn via Frontier Markets’ proprietary, flexible Meri-Saheli platform.
  • 10,000 of these women small business owners will be further enabled to grow their business by becoming Airtel Payments Bank Business Correspondents (BCs) and unlock additional revenue streams.
  • In India, women-owned micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) constitute 20 per cent of all MSMEs yet receive only 5 percent of the total financing provided by public-sector banks

RBI raises small value payment transaction limit in offline mode to Rs 500

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised the upper limit of an offline payment transaction to Rs 500 from the existing Rs 200 to promote the use of UPI-Lite wallet in areas where internet connectivity is weak or not available.
  • The total limit for offline transactions on a payment instrument, however, remains Rs 2,000.
  • The RBI launched a device wallet called UPI Lite in September last year to increase the speed of small-value transactions on UPI, optimise processing resources for banks and reduce transaction failures.
  • The product currently processes more than 10 million transactions a month.
  • Earlier this month, the RBI had proposed facilitating offline transactions using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to promote UPI-Lite. Transactions through NFC do not require PIN verification.

Kaziranga National Park gets first Woman field Director

  • Chief conservator of forests Dr Sonali Ghosh became the first woman field director of Kaziranga National Park.
  • The Indian Forest Service (IAS) officer will take charge of the park from incumbent field director Jatindra Sarma.
  • Ghosh is presently working as the chief conservator of forests for research education and working plan division at the office of the principal chief conservator of forests and head of the forest force in Guwahati.
  • According to a forest department official, she will become the first woman to hold charge as director of the 118-year-old KNP.
  • The KNP was first declared a proposed reserve forest in 1905, followed by a reserve forest in 1908 and a game sanctuary in 1916. It was opened to visitors in 1938.
  • In 1950, it was declared as a wildlife sanctuary and upgraded to a national park in February 1974.
  • UNESCO declared KNP as a World Heritage Site in December 1985.

Shell India appoints Mansi Madan Tripathy as new country chair

  • Shell India has appointed Mansi Madan Tripathy as the new country chair of the company, effective from 1 October.
  • Tripathy will succeed Nitin Prasad who has been the country chair since 2016.
  • ‘As Country Chair of Shell India, Mansi will oversee Shell Group of companies in India, in addition to her role as Vice President, Shell Lubricants for Asia Pacific.
  • Mansi will relocate from Singapore to New Delhi, her home city, to take up the role.
  • She joined the company from Procter & Gamble in 2012, where she held several regional and global director-level positions.

Indian Air Force participates in Exercise Bright Star-23

  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) participated in the biennial multilateral tri-services exercise Bright Star-23 held at Cairo Air Base in Egypt.
  • It is being held from August 27 to September 16, 2023.
  • The participating countries in the biennial multilateral tri-services exercise Bright Star-23 include the United States, Saudi Arabia, Greece, Qatar, and India.
  • The participation of the IAF in this exercise underscores a new chapter of cooperation and collaboration among nations.
  • The Indian Air Force contingent for this exercise is an impressive assembly, comprising five MiG-29 aircraft, two IL-78 aircraft, two C-130 aircraft, and two C-17 aircraft.

India’s Men’s Relay Team Finishes Fifth at World Athletics Championship

  • Indian men’s 4x400m relay team finished fifth in their respective finals at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.
  • The team of Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Amob Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal and Rajesh Ramesh completed the race with the clock reading 2:59.92.
  • USA (Quincy Hall, Vernon Norwood, Justin Robinson, and Rai Benjaminwon), who won the gold medal finished the race in 2:57:31 seconds. France (2:58.45) and Great Britain (2:58.71) won silver and bronze respectively.
  • A day earlier the Indian team had shattered the Asian record in the qualifying round, taking 2:59.05 seconds to complete the race.
  • The previous record was held by Japan, which was 2:59.51 seconds. They also became the first Indian team to reach a World Championship final.
  • France clocked bagged silver while Great Britain claimed bronze.

HS Prannoy wins bronze at BWF World Championship 2023

  • In badminton, India’s ace shuttler HS Prannoy had to settle for a bronze medal as he registered a loss to Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the semifinals of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships.
  • Prannoy went down to world number three and three-time Junior champion Vitidsarn by 21-18, 13-21, 14-21.
  • Prannoy had stormed into the semi-final of the BWF World Championships after defeating World Number 2 and the defending champion Viktor Axelsen at Kuala Lumpur.
  • With this win, World Number 7 Prannoy assured a bronze medal for India by beating the home favourite Axelsen in three games 21-13, 15-21, 16-21.
  • This is India’s 14th medal at the World Championships. This includes one gold, four silvers and nine bronze medals.
  • China is the most successful team in the tournament’s history, with 196 medals, including 69 gold, 48 silver and 79 silvers.
  • The BWF World Championships 2023 was held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Sunil Gavaskar joins ‘Midwicket Stories’ as principal advisor

  • Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has joined ‘Midwicket Stories’ as principal advisor.
  • Also known by the nicknames ‘Sunny’ and ‘Little Master’, Gavaskar is among the greatest Indian cricketers to have graced the gentleman’s game.
  • The concept of ‘Midwicket Stories’ is where former players come together and talk about their time, talk about things that happened during their time.
  • There is an anchor who asks the question. The whole idea is that at that particular point of time there was not the kind of availability of putting those stories south like it is there today in the public media.
  • Gavaskar is a distinguished member of India’s maiden World Cup winning squad of 1983, Gavaskar once held the record for scoring the most centuries in Tests. The Mumbaikar, who scored more than 10,000 runs in red-ball cricket, brought down the curtains to his career with 45 half centuries and 34 centuries to his name.

Obituary

Veteran lyricist Dev Kohli passes away

  • Veteran lyricist and poet Dev Kohli passed away in Mumbai.
  • He had penned over a hundred songs for Bollywood films such as Baazigar, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Maine Pyaar Kiya, Shoot Out At Lokhandwala, among many others.
  • Kohli is famed for his songs over 100 films including ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya,’ ‘Baazigar,’ ‘Judwaa 2,’ ‘Musafir,’ ‘Shoot Out At Lokhandwala,’ and ‘Taxi No. 9211.’ He has collaborated with music directors like Anu Malik, Raam Laxman, Anand Raaj Anand, Anand Milind among others.
  • Dev Kohli was born on November 2, 1942, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. He moved to Delhi in 1949 and spent his childhood in Dehradun.
  • He wrote lyrics for several hit songs like ‘Aate Jaate Hanste Gaate,’ ‘Kabootar Ja Ja Ja,’ ‘Aaja Shaam Hone Aayee,’ ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ and ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’
  • From Shankar-Jaikishan to Vishal-Shekhar, Dev Kohli worked with different generations of composers in a career that spanned from 1969 to 2013.
