India Rejects Hague Court’s Indus Waters Treaty Ruling

• India rejected the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) ruling concerning the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan.
• The Court of Arbitration, the world’s oldest permanent forum for international dispute, further said that India had no justification for ending or suspending the agreement and that the treaty between the two subcontinent arch-rivals remained fully in force.

Bihar, Jharkhand sign MoU for sharing of Sone river water

• Bihar and Jharkhand signed a Memorandum of Understanding for sharing of Sone river water. The agreement was signed by Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and his Jharkhand counterpart Hemant Soren in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil.
• This agreement will provide irrigation water to lakhs of farmers in large rural areas of Bihar and Jharkhand, along with drinking water for the people.

4th Indo-German Environmental Forum to be held in New Delhi

• The 4th Indo-German Environmental Forum will be held in New Delhi to strengthen bilateral cooperation and facilitate multi-stakeholder exchange on environment and climate change.
• Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav, along with German Minister for Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Carsten Schneider, will co-chair the forum.
• Both sides will discuss key issues relating to environmental protection and climate policy to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, exchange experiences and advance practical collaboration.

SCO Summit 2026: Highlights

• The 26th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) was held from August 31 to September 1, 2026, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Key Details

• Host & Chair: Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov hosted the summit, marking the end of Kyrgyzstan’s 2025–2026 rotating chairmanship.
• Theme: “25 Years of the SCO: Together for Sustainable Peace, Development and Prosperity”.
• Anniversary: The event marked the 25th anniversary of the founding of the SCO.
• Next Chair: Kyrgyzstan handed over the rotating chairmanship to Pakistan at the conclusion of the summit.

Key Outcomes & Agenda

• Bishkek Declaration: Leaders signed the official Bishkek Declaration along with 27 other documents focused on regional security, trade, and connectivity.
• Stance on Terrorism: PM Modi strongly urged member states to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism and stated there is “no place for double standards on terrorism”.
• Support for Iran: The SCO backed Iran’s right to develop peaceful nuclear energy and slammed ongoing foreign attacks and sanctions against the member state.

India’s GDP grows better than expected at 7.8% in April-June

• India’s gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 7.8% in the first quarter of the current financial year, driven by robust expansion in services and manufacturing sector, despite disruptions caused in the global economy due to the West Asia conflict.
• Powered by strong manufacturing and services sector growth, India remained one of the fastest growing major economies, with China expanding 4.3 per cent and Indonesia growing 5.3 per cent in the June quarter.
• India’s economy had grown 6.9 per cent in the June quarter of last financial year.
• The gross value added (GVA) growth print at 8.2 per cent for Q1 was higher than real gross domestic product (GDP) growth, signalling subsidies outstripped indirect taxes during the quarter.
• Nominal GDP grew at 10.3 per cent in the June quarter against 9.1 per cent in the preceding March quarter of FY26, indicating towards built up in inflationary pressure.

GST collections jump 14.8% to Rs 1.99 lakh crore in August 2026

• India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections witnessed a significant rise to ₹1,99,853 crore, registering a 8% year-on-year increase compared with ₹1,74,116 crore collected in August 2025.
• GST revenue from domestic transactions rose 9.3% to ₹1.37 lakh crore, while revenue from imports jumped 29% to ₹62,604 crore during the month.
• The Central GST (CGST) collection stood at ₹38,413 crore, while State GST (SGST) collections were ₹46,316 crore. Integrated GST (IGST) collections stood at over ₹1.15 lakh crore.
