Exp. The Union Territory of Lakshadweep has been declared as Organic Agricultural Area by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer’s welfare. The UT is second after Sikkim to achieve the status of 100% organic region. It is first in the Union Territories of India to achieve the status.

Lakshadweep has been separated from the main stream India geographically. There has been no shipment of chemicals and fertilizers to the island group for the last 15 years.

Exp. Bank of Baroda (BoB) has recently launched the Atmanirbhar Women Scheme as part of its Baroda Gold Loan.

Aims: This scheme aims to target the self-reliant woman in India. Under the scheme, the bank is offering loans at 0.50 per cent concession for women. The bank under the gold loan scheme is offering agri-gold loan at 0.25 per cent concession and for a retail loan at 0.50 per cent concession.

Exp. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on 8th Dec has approved USD 300 million (about Rs 2,200 crore) loan to strengthen and improve access to comprehensive primary health care in urban areas in India.

“The program will benefit an estimated 256 million urban residents, including 51 million from the slum areas of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and West Bengal.

Exp. The World Economic Forum (WEF) has decided to host its 2021 annual meeting in Singapore, which earlier was scheduled to take place in Lucerne-Burgenstock, Switzerland from 13-16 May 2021.

The decision to shift the annual forum from Switzerland has been taken in view of the Covid-19 situation in Europe.

Exp. Madagascar has replaced the Maldives as the host of the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event had been awarded to the Maldives last year, but members of the Indian Ocean Island Games Federation voted to move the Games to Madagascar. The Maldives had requested pushing back the 2023 Games to 2025.

Exp. Contemporary Indian dancer Astad Deboo, renowned for marrying Kathak and Kathakali into a unique form, passed away on 10th Dec. He was 73.

Deboo is noted for creating a modern dance vocabulary that was uniquely Indian. He was also a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2007.

Exp. Paolo Rossi, Italy’s goalscoring hero from their victorious 1982 World Cup campaign, has died from “an incurable disease”, aged 64. His death comes with the football world still in mourning for Argentina icon Diego Maradona, who passed away late last month.

Rossi won two Serie A titles, a European Cup and a Coppa Italia with Juventus but will be most fondly remembered for his six goals at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
