Harsh Vardhan launches coastal research vessel ‘Sagar Anveshika’

  • Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan has launched Coastal Research Vessel (CRV) ‘Sagar Anveshika’ which will enhance India’s capacity to acquire marine scientific data.
  • Equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, Sagar Anveshika is capable of supporting multidisciplinary research in various fields e.g. marine biogeochemistry, physical oceanography especially coastal pollution, marine biota’s impact on climate change, assessment of marine resources, etc, according to the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
  • The CRV, launched at Chennai Port is the sixth research vessel under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. While speaking on the occasion, Harsh Vardhan said that there are enormous socio-economic benefits to be reaped through a better understanding of ocean systems and processes.

♦Manipur launches COSFOM website for forest department

Manipur launches COSFOM website for forest department

  • Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Awangbow Newmai launched a website for the Community-based Sustainable Forest Management for Water Resource Conservation in Manipur (COSFOM).
  • COSFOM is a component under the Indo-German Programme ‘Climate Change Adaption in the Himalaya’ with a focus on sustainable community forestry, soil and water conservation. A project of the Government of India supported by the Federal Government of Germany through KfW, a German development bank in Frankfurt with Manipur Forest Department as the executing agency and managed by the Community Forestry and Water Conservation Society-Manipur (CF & WCS).

♦WB’s CM Mamata Banerjee Inaugurates 26th Kolkata International Film Festival

  • West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee has inaugurated the 26th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF). The inaugural ceremony was also virtually attended by Bollywood superstar and West Bengal’s brand ambassador Shah Rukh Khan from Mumbai.
  • Legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s classic ‘Apur Sansar’ will be the inaugural film of the festival in which 131 movies from 45 countries will be screened till January 13.

♦Saudi Arabia to build a zero emissions city

Saudi Arabia to build a zero emissions city

  • Saudi Arabia unveiled plans for a zero carbon city within the projected NEOM zone, the kingdom’s futuristic business hub set to be built along the Red Sea coast.
  • Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the launch of the city, called ‘The Line’, in a televised presentation on 10th Jan.
  • The eco-city with “zero cars, zero streets and zero carbon emissions” will have the capacity to house one million residents, according to the de-facto ruler of the oil-rich kingdom. It will have facilities like schools, health centers and green spaces.

♦India signs Rs 2,113 crore loan pact with Japan to support COVID-19 relief efforts

  • Japan has committed Official Development Assistance loan of an amount of JPY 30 billion (approx. Rs. 2,113 crore) to support India’s efforts at providing social assistance to the poor and vulnerable households, severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • This further consolidates and strengthens the Strategic and Global Partnership between India and Japan.

♦India’s real GDP to expand by 10.1% in FY2022: Icra

  • India’s economy is expected to see double digit growth at 10.1% in the FY22 according to ICRA.
  • The rating agency had projected a 7.8% contraction for the ongoing fiscal, in line with the recently released first advance estimates of GDP by the Centre, which pegged the shrinkage in FY21 at 7.7%.

  • Suriname President Chandrika Persad Santokhi, Curacao Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath and New Zealand minister Priyanca Radhakrishnan were among 30 NRIs, and Indian-origin people and organisations who were conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award on January 9, 2021.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind presented the awards at a virtual event on the third and final day of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations.

Maharashtra DGP Subodh K Jaiswal takes over as new CISF chief

  • Former Maharashtra DGP Subodh Kumar Jaiswal on 9th Jan took over as the new chief of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) that is primarily tasked to guard major Indian civil airports and vital infrastructure in the aerospace and nuclear domain.
  • Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) DG Kumar Rajesh Chandra was handling the additional charge of the CISF after incumbent Rajesh Ranjan retired on November 30 last year. Jaiswal is set to retire from service in September, 2022.

♦ISRO to adopt 100 Atal Tinkering Labs to promote scientific temperament

  • ISRO will adopt 100 Atal Tinkering Labs across the country to promote scientific temperament among students and encourage them for space education and space technology-related innovations. This decision was taken by ISRO and Atal Innovation Mission, NITI Aayog at a virtual meeting on 11th Jan.
  • The students will not only gain theoretical but also practical and application-based knowledge of STEM and Space Education related concepts such as electronics, physics, optics, space technology, material sciences and many more.

♦11 January – Death anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri

  • He was the second Prime Minister of Independent India. He popularised the slogan ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ He actively participated in India’s freedom struggle.
  • Due to cardiac arrest, He born 2 October 1904 Mughalsarai, United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, British India (now in Uttar Pradesh, India) died on 11 January, 1966.

♦Former Gujarat Chief Minister Madhavsinh Solanki passes aways

  • FORMER UNION external affairs minister and four-time chief minister of Gujarat, veteran Congress leader Madhavsinh Solanki passed away, he was 93.
  • In 1984, Madhavsinh Solanki led a historic victory of the Congress in the state assembly by winning 149 seats, a record which is hitherto unbroken.
