RS Sharma to head empowered committee for COVID-19 vaccine administration

  • The Government of India has appointed RS Sharma as the Chairperson of an empowered committee for the administration of COVID-19 vaccine. The empowered committee is a 10-member team comprising of some senior officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH&FW) and the Unique Identification Authority of India.

♦Government of India places order of 11 million doses of COVISHIELD

  • On January 11, 2021, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the state governments need not pay for vaccinating the priority group of three core health and Frontline workers.
  • The cost or to be Borne by the Central Government. The Government of India has place a purchase order of 11 million doses of COVISHIELD with the Pune based Institute of India. The cost of one dose is 210 rupees including GST.

  • The Henley Passport Index was launched by the International air Transport Association. Around 227 different travel destinations are considered to launch the index. The index is released based on the number of destinations the holders can access without visa.
  • Japan tops the list of being the most powerful passport in the world for the year 2021. Singapore was in second, South Korea and Germany were at third position. India ranked 85th.
  • The countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria were the countries with the worst passport.

India's GDP to grow at 11 per cent in FY22: Brickwork Ratings

  • The country’s real gross domestic product (GDP) is likely to expand by 11 per cent in the next financial year due to a faster economic recovery and on a low base, says a report. The report by domestic rating agency Brickwork Ratings.
  • We expect the real GDP to grow at 11 per cent in FY22, from the estimated contraction of 7 per cent to 7.5 per cent in FY21,” the agency said.

Maritime security, coastal defence exercise begins on 12 Jan

  • The Navy will coordinate the second edition of the coastal defence exercise on January 12 and 13. It will be undertaken along the entire coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone of India.
  • The Navy said Sea Vigil 2021, a biennial exercise that began in January 2019, “will be undertaken along the entire 7516 km coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone of India and will involve all the 13 coastal States and Union Territories along with other maritime stakeholders, including the fishing and coastal communities”.

Renowned writer Ved Mehta, who took India to Americans passed away

  • Celebrated Indian-American novelist Ved Mehta, who overcame blindness and became widely known as the 20th-century writer most responsible for introducing American readers to India, has died at his home here at the age of 86. The New Yorker magazine, where he had been a staff writer for 33 years.
  • Mehta’s 24 books included volumes of reportage on India, among them ”Walking the Indian Streets” (1960), ”Portrait of India” (1970) and ”Mahatma Gandhi and His Apostles” (1977), as well as explorations of philosophy, theology and linguistics.

♦Padma Awardee Turlapati Kutumba Rao passes away

  • Veteran journalist and Padma Shri awardee Turlapati Kutumba Rao died following a heart attack in Vijayawada early on 11 Jan. The Government of India conferred the Padma Shri on Kutumba Rao in 2002.
  • Kutumba Rao, who became a journalist at 14, served as Secretary to the first Chief Minister of Andhra state, Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, in the 1950s.
  • He was also an author and orator, and held the Guinness World Record for presiding over more than 10,000 public meetings. Rao had addressed more than 20,000 events during his career that spanned over six and a half decades.
