♦AICTE constitutes panel for engineers Bill headed by M.S. Ananth

  • Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal has informed K. Somaprasad, MP, that the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has constituted a committee for preparing the Professional Engineers Bill.
  • The committee will function under the chairmanship of M.S. Ananth, former director, IIT Mardas. Mr. Somaprasad had pointed out that though there were 10,396 engineering institutes in India approved by the AICTE at present, only few were imparting quality education.

♦Odisha launches ‘Sujal’ Mission to provide tap water fit for drinking

  • Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik has inaugurated “Sujal”, ‘Drink from Tap Mission’ scheme, to provide round the clock supply of quality tap drinking water in all urban areas of the state.
  • The state has set the target to provide piped water connections to all urban areas in the state by March 2022. Odisha government has set Rs 1300 crore for this scheme which will benefit over 15 lakh people in 15 towns in a phased manner.

Army chief MM Naravane to get honorary rank of General of Nepali Army

  • Army chief General M.M. Naravane will be visiting Nepal next month where he will be conferred the honorary rank of General of the Nepali Army in an investiture ceremony, the Nepal Army said on 14th October.
  • Defence sources told ThePrint the visit is likely to take place in the first week of November. Nepal’s President Bidhya Devi Bhandari will confer the honorary rank upon Gen. Naravane in the ceremony.

India ranks 58th in the List of Arton Capital’s Passport Index, New Zealand Tops

  • New Zealand has knocked off Japan for the strongest passport in the world according to the latest Global Passport Index compiled by global financial advisory firm Arton Capital.
  • The US passport ranked 21 and India, 58. The passport index lists the power of passports in terms of real-time, visa restrictions, factoring in legislative changes, and entry requirements.
  • The index, which compares the access granted by the passports of 193 United Nations member countries.

 India and France re-elected as president and co-president of International Solar Alliance

  • India and France were re-elected as the president and co-president of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) for a term of two years on 14th October at the virtual meeting of the third assembly. The event was attended by 34 ISA Members ministers. A total of 53 member countries and 5 signatory and prospective member countries participated in the assembly.
  • Four new Vice-Presidents were also chosen to represent the four regions of ISA. The representatives of Fiji & Nauru for Asia Pacific Region; Mauritius & Niger for Africa Region; UK & Netherlands for Europe and others Region, and Cuba and Guyana for Latin America and Caribbean Region assumed the vice presidency.

  • “Bank of Ghana” has won the Central bank of the year award 2020. Apart from this, Mark Carney (Governor of the Bank of England) has won the Governor of the year at the Central bank of the year award 2020.
  • Central Banking Awards is held annually to recognize excellence in the central banking community.

  • Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day is celebrated every year on October 15 in several countries to honor, celebrate, and remember babies who have passed away due to miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, and other causes of infant loss.
  • Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day serves to promote greater Awareness, Remembrance and Support of the estimated 1 in 4 individuals and families whose lives are irrevocably altered by the death of their children, during pregnancy, at birth, and in infancy.

15th October: World Students Day 2020

  • World Students Day every year is celebrated across the globe on 15th October,that is on October 15. The day is marked to celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
  • It was first celebrated in 2010 in United Nations on Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s birthday when he was 79 years old.

Jnanpith awardee poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri passes away at 94

  • Renowned Malayalam poet and Jnanpith laureate Mahakavi Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri died at a private hospital on 15th October.
  • He was conferred with the Jnanpith award, the highest literary award in the country. The poet, who was instrumental in heralding modernism in Malayalam poetry, was also a true Gandhian, social reformer, journalist and an example of simplicity.
