  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the United Nations (UN) Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) through video conferencing on 17th
  • The UN CMS being organized in Gandhinagar, Gujarat begins and will conclude on February 22.
  • The summit is likely to bring together 1200 delegates from over 110 countries to deliberate on the alarming decline of migratory species.

  • Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium which is also known as Motera Cricket stadium is set to become the largest cricket stadium in the world. The cricket facility will have a seating capacity of 1,10,000 people.
  • US President Donald Trump, during his India visit, would participate in a grand roadshow in Ahmedabad and also tour the Sabarmati Ashram and inaugurate a newly-built cricket stadium here with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  • The demand was put forward by the former MLA of Latur (Rural) Trimbak Bhise.
  • The late Vilasrao Deshmukh had served as the former CM of Maharashtra.

  • The UK has won the bid to host the 26th Conference of the Parties, known as COP26, following a partnership with Italy.
  • Up to 30,000 delegates are expected to attend the event at Glasgow’s Scottish Events Campus (SEC) at the end of 2020 .
  • It is designed to produce an international response to the climate emergency.

  • Theme: “Investing in sustainable food systems to end hunger by 2030″.
  • International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) stated that the sequences of climate change and its impacts on agriculture will push around 100 million people to poverty by 2030.

Moody's cuts India's 2020 growth forecast to 5.4% amid coronavirus fears

  • Global rating agency Moody’s said on 17th February that India’s economic recovery is likely to be shallow and expand at a lower pace of 5.4 per cent in Calendar 2020 than the earlier estimate of 6.6 per cent.
  • In a review of the global economy to assess likely to impact on Coronavirus outbreak, Moody’s said it (virus and its spread) has diminished optimism about prospects of an incipient stabilisation of global growth this year.

  • The Government of India and the World Bank today signed a $450 million loan agreement to support the national program to arrest the country’s depleting groundwater levels and strengthen groundwater institutions.
  • Aims: The World Bank-supported Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABHY) – National Groundwater Management Improvement Program will be implemented in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh and cover 78 districts.

United by Emotion: Motto of 2020 Tokyo Olympics announced

  • United by Emotion’ was revealed as the motto for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics on 17th February as organisers look to hammer home the message of diversity and inclusion.
  • The motto will be displayed on the iconic Tokyo Skytree, the Japanese capital’s tallest landmark, from Monday until March 25, the day before the torch relay begins.
  • Some 10,000 athletes from over 200 countries will gather in Tokyo for the Olympics, which run from July 24 to Aug. 9.
