Gram Ujala Scheme Launched for Rural Areas; poor households to get LED for Rs. 10

  • India has launched the “Gram Ujala Scheme” on March 19, 2021 to provide the cheapest LED bulbs in the rural areas. The scheme was launched by the Union power and new and renewable energy minister, Raj Kumar Singh.
  • In the first phase, the scheme was launched from Arrah district in Bihar. In this phase around 15 million LED bulbs will be distributed in the villages of Arrah (Bihar), Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh), Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Nagpur (Maharashtra), and western Gujarat.
  • About ‘Gram Ujala Scheme’: The Gram Ujala Scheme is an ambitious scheme which offers the world’s cheapest LED bulbs in rural areas. This is the first such scheme in India. It provides the LED Bulbs in these areas at a mere ₹10. This the scheme also furthers its climate change strategy and strengthen the self-reliance credentials. The scheme does not come with the government’s support or subsidy.

  • Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan was on 19th March sworn in as the country’s first female president after the sudden death of John Magufuli from an illness shrouded in mystery.
  • Hassan, 61, a soft-spoken Muslim woman from the island of Zanzibar, will finish Magufuli’s second five-year term, set to run until 2025.

  • India has been ranked 139 out of 149 countries in the list of UN World Happiness Report 2021 released on 19th March which is topped by Finland.
  • The World Happiness Report 2021, issued by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, focuses on the effects of COVID-19 and how people all over the world have fared. India is on the 139th spot in the list. In 2019, India was ranked 140th.

  • The UNCTAF on 19th March said India’s Covid-19 stimulus fell short of initial announcements, leading to a lower than expected economic performance in 2020.
  • UNCTAD expects India’s GDP to have contracted 6.9% in 2020 and grow 5% in 2021, attributing the stronger recovery projected for 2021 to the deeper-than-expected downturn in 2020.

♦Sharath Kamal becomes first Indian paddler to qualify for Tokyo Olympics

  • The seasoned Achanta Sharath Kamal on 18th March became the first Indian paddler to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games after a dominant win over Pakistan’s Muhammad Rameez at the Asian Olympic Qualification tournament in Doha.
  • It will be Kamal’s fourth appearance at the Olympic Games.

ISSF WC: Yashaswini wins first gold for India, Manu Bhaker clinches silver

  • Yashaswini Deswal bagged the first gold medal for India in the Women’s 10M Air Pistol final of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun on 20th March.
  • Another Indian shooter Manu Bhaker won a silver medal with 236.7 points.

Athlete Avinash Sable Sets New National Record In Men’s 3000m Steeplechase

  • The Indian athlete Avinash Sable set a new national record in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event in the ongoing Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships in Patiala, with timing of 8:20.20.
  • With this, the 26-year-old Avinash broke his own record of 8:21.37 which he set in 2019, after finishing 13th in the final of the World Athletics Championships in Doha.

Operation Sankalp: Indian Navy undertakes Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Royal Bahrain Naval Force

  • Indian Navy on 18th March undertook Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Royal Bahrain Naval Force Corvette Al Muharraq in the Persian Gulf under Operation Sankalp.
  • PASSEXs are conducted regularly by the Indian Navy with units of friendly foreign navies, whilst visiting each other’s ports or during a rendezvous at sea.
  • The exercises are aimed at fostering interoperability and reflecting the commitments of both, India and Bahrain, to build cooperative partnerships in meeting emergent maritime challenges.

Defence Ministry seals deal with BDL to acquire 4,690 anti-tank guided missiles

  • The Defence Ministry on March 19, 2021 sealed a deal with public sector undertaking Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to acquire 4,960 MILAN-2T anti-tank guided missiles at a cost of ₹ 1,188 crore for the Indian Army. The missiles, having a range of 1,850 metres, are being produced by BDL under license from French defence major MBDA Missile Systems.
  • These missiles can be fired from ground as well as vehicle-based launchers and can be deployed in anti-tank role for both offensive and defensive tasks.

  • World Oral Health Day is celebrated on 20 March to raise awareness about oral health. The theme of World Oral Health day 2021 is “Be Proud Of Your Mouth“. In other words, value and take care of it.
  • For the next three years, the theme is “Be Proud Of Your Mouth”.

21 March – World Forestry Day or International Day of Forests

  • On 21st March, World Forestry Day or International Day of Forests is celebrated every year to raise public awareness about the values, significance, and contributions of the forests to balance the life cycle on the earth.  In 1971, World Forestry Day was established at the 23rd General Assembly of the European Confederation of Agriculture.
  • Theme 2021:”Forest restoration: a path to recovery and well-being.”

21 March – World Down Syndrome Day

  • Every year on March 21, World Down Syndrome Day is observed to create awareness about down syndrome. It is a condition in which a child is born with an extra 21st chromosome.
  • First observed in 2012, the United Nation aims to make people understand that those who are born with this condition should be accepted equally in this society.
  • Theme 2021: “We Decide.”

21 March – World Poetry Day

  • World Poetry Day is celebrated on 21 March, and was declared by UNESCO in 1999, “with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard”.
  • Every year to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.
