National (Current Affairs)
♦Cabinet reduces salaries of MPs by 30% for a year, no MPLAD funds for 2 years

- In This emerging situation arising due to the rapid spread of coronavirus, the cabinet promulgated an ordinance to reduce the salaries, allowances and pensions of Members of Parliament (MPs) by 30 per cent for one year. The minister also announced that The President, Vice President, Governors of States have voluntarily decided to take a pay cut as a social responsibility. The money will go to Consolidated Fund of India.
- The decision was communicated by Prakash Javadekar in a presser.
- The Cabinet also approved the temporary suspension of the MPLAD (Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme) Fund during 2020-21 & 2021-22. The consolidated amount of MPLAD Funds for 2 years – Rs 7900 crores – will go to Consolidated Fund of India, declared Prakash Javadekar in the press briefing.

♦Nasscom appoints Infosys’ Pravin Rao as chairman

- Industry body Nasscom on 6th April appointed Infosys’ chief operating officer UB Pravin Rao as chairman for 2020-21, succeeding WNS Global Services Group CEO Keshav Murugesh. It appointed Rekha Menon, chairman and senior MD of Accenture in India as the vice-chairperson.

Defence
♦Operation Sanjeevani: IAF airlifts medical and hospital consumables for the Maldives

- Indian Air Force (IAF) airlifts around 6.2 tonnes of essential medicines and hospital consumables onboard C-130 aircraft from India to Male. Since there has been lockdown in India due to COVID-19, Medicines including influenza vaccines, anti-viral drugs such as Lopinavir and Ritonavir (these two medicines are being used in other countries to treat COVID-19 ) have gone to the Maldives.
- IAF launched `Operation Sanjeevani’ and with the help of the Indian Army medicines were lifted from different airports across the country including — New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Madurai and then were flown to the Maldives.

♦FIFA postpones U-17 Women’s World Cup in India due to Covid-19 pandemic

- The FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be held in India in November was on 4th April postponed by the football’s world governing body due to the worsening COVID-19 pandemic.
- The women’s age group showpiece was to be held at five venues in the country from November 2-2021.
- The decision was taken by the FIFA-Confederations working group which was recently established by the Bureau of the FIFA Council to address the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

♦World Games in Birmingham, Alabama postponed until 2022

- The 2021 World Games have been pushed back by a year to avoid clashing with the Tokyo Olympics which were rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic, World Games organisers said on 3rd April.
- The World Games, which are held every four years and feature 32 sports that are not part of the Olympic program, were scheduled to take place in Birmingham, Alabama, from 15–25 July next year but have now been postponed to 7-17 July, 2022.

♦6th April: International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2020

- April 6 is the United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, which recognizes the power of sport in promoting peace and erasing cultural barriers worldwide. Sport is a positive way of achieving goodwill, healthy competition and cooperation across all cultures.

♦The United Nations Declares April 5 as International Day of Conscience

- In July 2019, during the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, the United Nations adopted a draft resolution submitted by the Kingdom of Bahrain and declared April 5 as the International Day of Conscience.
- The Assembly invited “all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, as well as the private sector and civil society, to build the culture of peace with love and conscience in accordance with the culture and other appropriate circumstances or customs or their local, national and regional communities, including through quality education and public awareness-raising activities, thereby fostering sustainable development.”
♦5th April: 57th National Maritime Day

- The National Maritime Day is celebrated every year day to illustrate the awareness in supporting intercontinental commerce and the global economy as the most well-organized, safe and sound, environmentally responsive approach of transporting goods from one corner to another corner of the world.
- The National Maritime Day was first celebrated on April 5, 1964. The saga of India shipping first started on April 5, 1919, when the SS Loyalty, the first ship of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd travelled from Mumbai to the United Kingdom (London).

♦American singer & 3 time Grammy awardee Bill Withers passed away

- Bill Withers, Grammy-winning writer and singer of ‘Lean on Me,‘ dies at 81. Bill Withers, a three-time Grammy Award winner who wrote and sang a string of soulful songs in the 1970s that have stood the test of time, including “Lean On Me,“ “Lovely Day” and “Ain’t No Sunshine,” died March 30 in Los Angeles.
