DRDO Successfully conducted Mission Divyastra: Agni 5 Missile with MIRV Technology

The Defence Research and Development Organisation has recently conducted a successful and most awaited mission Divyastra. India has successfully tested the new age Agni 5 ballistic missile with an ability to carry multiple warheads and each carried warhead has the potential to hit a separate target. This is an ambitious mission and finally conducted by the DRDO.

The test underscores the long awaited upgrade in the Indian missile systems. This successful test of the new age Agni 5 missile confirmed its enhanced strike capability and it includes the one of the strongest options that is nuclear.

The Agni 5 missile has the MIRV- Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle Technology.

What is MIRV Technology?

The MIRV ( Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle) technology originated around five decades ago. There are only a few countries that are capable of using this advanced technology such as the United States, Russia, China, United Kingdom and France.

Pakistan also claimed last year to test a MIVR technology based missile named Ababeel.

MIVR technology enables a missile to aim Multiple targets and these targets can be located anywhere with a distance of hundreds of kilometers apart from each other.

About Agni missile:

Agni missiles are indigenously developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation. It is a long range ballistic missile. The Agni missile has had its place in the weapons of the Indian armed forces since the early 1990s.

The Agni 1 to Agni 4 missile has the capacity to hit the target around 700 km to  3,500 KM. These missiles from the Agni family have already been deployed. Agni 5 missile has been successfully tested since 2012 and this is the test of Agni 5 missile equipped with MIRV Technology.

This test of Agni 5 missile follows the footsteps of the last successfully conducted two tests of Agni-P missile in 2021. Agni-P missile is a latest and updated version of Agni 1 and Agni 2 missile with new technologies.

The next upgraded version of Agni missile named Agni 6 is expected to be an intercontinental ballistic missile with a range well over 7,000 km.

The Agni 5 missile having MIRV Technology has the ability to carry three to four warheads. The main missile can release these warheads from different attitudes and for separate targets. Thus the Agni 5 missile with MIRV Technology can cover a large area of influence.

The MIRV Technology can significantly increase the potential of Agni 5 missile as per the official announcement. Agni 5 missile can hit targets more than 5,000km away. The Agni 5 missile uses a solid fuelled engine that has three stages.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation for the successful test of Agni 5 missile with MIRV Technology. Now India entered the range of a few handful nations which have potential to use MIRV Technology equipped missiles.
