India celebrated Good Governance day on 25th December every year to celebrate the birth anniversary of India’s one of the most eminent leaders and former Prime Minister of Atal Bihar Vajpayee. India celebrates Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birth anniversary as Good Governance Day since 2014.

The day was made in respect of the former PM by raising awareness among the Indian people of accountability in government.

Why is it celebrated?

The former Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) were honored with India’s highest civilian award for merit, the Bharat Ratna, by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on 23 December 2014.

After the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi constituted the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister as Good Governance Day.

Good governance week (2021):

The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions is observing ‘Good Governance Week 2021’ from December 20-25.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a message to the government is to be committed to toning up good governance that is “pro-people” and led by “citizen-first” approach.

This year the theme of ‘Good Governance Week’ is “Prashasan Gaon Ki Aur”. It is celebrated as part of the 75th ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebration.

There are following events was held in the celebration:

December 21st: Discussion on “Good Governance Initiatives by Ministry of External Affairs”.
December 22nd: Discussion on “National Workshop on Next Phase of Reforms to bring down compliance burden and Integrated & effective Governance practices by DPIIT (department for promotion of Industry and Internal Trade”.
December 23rd: A workshop by the Department of Personnel & Training on the theme – “Mission Karmayogi- The Path Ahead”
December 24th: Workshop by Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances on the theme- “Initiative for Increasing efficiency in Decision Making in Central Secretariat”.
December 25th: “Good Governance Day” is celebrated.

First time celebration of Good Governance Day: PM Modi observed the Good Governance Day first time in 2018 with inaugural event at the Bogibeel Bridge.

Currently in news:

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath is going to put the foundation stone of 11 public welfare projects worth ₹230 crore in Bateshwar village of Agra on the occasion of ‘Good Governance Day’. The Bateshwar Village of Agra is the native village of India’s former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

About Atal Bihari Vajpayee:

Born: 25 December, 1924 and Died on 16 August 2018
Education: He born in Gwalior, MP and get his schooling in same place. He completed graduation in BA with Hindi, English and Sanskrit. He was post graduated with an MA in political science from Kanpur.
Career: He was activist in independence movement at his early age. He was elected in 1957 to the Lok Sabha from Balrampur. He became the president of the Jana Sangh which is known after BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party).

He was made prime minister of India first time in May 1996. After that his served as a PM of India three terms. He was honored with highest civilian award of India, Bharat Ratna in 2014.

Influencing task during the three terms:

Nuclear test: India conducted 5 nuclear tests in May 1998 at the Pokhran desert in Rajasthan with support of then prime minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji.

Lahore Summit: PM Vajpayee ji did his full efforts to make diplomatic peace process with Pakistan and it was succeeded by the Lahore bus service. It was also expanded trade relations and mutual friendship between two countries.
Kargil War: Indian Army conducted ‘Operation Vijay’ to recapture the area and pushed back Pakistani soldiers and defeated the militants from other side.
