How to Add and Subtract Fractions
Hello Students in this article we learn about how to add and subtract fractions. Students face problems while solving the fractions. Fractions adding and subtracting is an important part of basic mathematics.
Any number in the form of
is known as a fraction. Here, a is called numerator and b is called the denominator.
How to add Fractions
Adding fraction with the same denominator
For example
![]()
To add this fraction, we simply add the numerator and leave the denominator the same,

Adding Fractions with the different denominator
This is the traditional method for adding the fraction. For example

Step-1 We need to calculate the L.C.M of the denominator.
Here, the L.C.M of Denominator 7 and 6 is 42.
Step-2 To find the numerator, we need to divide the LCM by each denominator one by one and multiply the result with the numerator.
Here, 42 ÷ 7 = 6 , 6 x 2 = 12 and 42 ÷ 6 = 7, 7 x 5 = 35

Lets see some examples
Example 1 Find the value of
![]()
Answer 1 L.CM of 5 and 4 is 20, First numerator is, 20 ÷ 5 = 4, 4 x 4 = 16 and second numerator is, 20 ÷ 4 = 5 , 5 x 3 = 15,
![]()
Example 2 Find the value of
![]()
Answer 2 L.C.M of 10 and 15 is 30. Now, divide 30 by 10 we will get 3, then multiply 3 with 7 we will get 21 & and divide 30 by 15 we will get 2, then multiply 2 with 11 we will get 22.
How to Subtract Fractions
Subtracting fraction with the same denominator
For example
![]()
In this case, we simply subtract the numerator and leave the denominator the same.

Subtracting Fractions with the different denominator
This is the traditional method for subtracting the fraction. For example
![]()
Step-1 We need to calculate the L.C.M of the denominator. Here the L.C.M of denominators 6 and 7 is 42.
Step-2 To find the numerator, we need to divide the LCM by each denominator one by one and multiply the result with the numerator. 42 ÷ 6 = 7 , 7 x 5 = 35 and 42 ÷ 7 = 6, 6 x 2 = 12
![]()
Example 1 Find the value of

Answer 1 L.CM of 7 and 4 is 28, First numerator is 28 ÷ 7 = 4, 4 x 4 = 16 and second numerator is 28 ÷ 4 = 7 , 1 x 7 = 7,

Example 2 Find the value of

Answer 2 L.C.M of 15 and 10 is 30. Now, divide 30 by 15 we will get 2, then multiply this 2 with 11 we will get 22 and then divide 30 by 10, we will get 3. Now multiply this 3 with 7 we will get 21
