India and Uzbekistan to develop the Chabahar port

India and Uzbekistan agreed to work with the full potential of the Chabahar port for trade after holding extensive talks with purpose on greater bilateral economic ties between two countries.
The two sides also corresponded to bring steps to enhance connectivity to boost trade during the 15th round of India-Uzbekistan Foreign Office Consultations that held place in Delhi.
15th round of India-Uzbekistan Foreign Office Consultations:
During the consultations, both sides attempted a comprehensive review of the state and prospects of bilateral cooperation including political, security, trade-economic, connectivity, development – partnership, humanitarian and cultural spheres.
On the India-Uzbekistan Foreign Office Consultations (FoC), the two sides commuted views on regional and international issues of mutual interest, including Afghanistan.
It supposed the talks particularly focused on greater economic cooperation and steps to enhance connectivity between India and Uzbekistan.
The consultations had been co-chaired by Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West) in the MEA and Furkat Sidikov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan. The last round of FoC was organized in the virtual format in November 2020.
About Chabahar Port:
The Chabahar port is being highly-developed by India, Iran and Afghanistan to boost trade ties. It is located in the Sistan-Balochistan province on the energy-rich Iran’s southern coast.
Chabahar Port is a seaport in Chabahar which is situated in southeastern Iran, on the Gulf of Oman. It is the only oceanic port of Iran. It has two separate ports named ‘Shahid Kalantari’ and ‘Shahid Beheshti’ with having five berths each.
In a significant step, India, Iran and Uzbekistan in December organized extensive talks on joint use of the Chabahar Port while emphasizing its importance in enhancing regional connectivity.
They consorted to further enhance cooperation in the UN, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and other multilateral fora.
Indian side carried its full support for Uzbekistan’s ongoing chairmanship of SCO. Both sides highly evaluated the holding of the 1st India-Central Asia Summit in January and harmonized to expeditiously implement its outcomes along with other Central Asian countries.
