India gifted maritime aircraft to Sri Lanka
India presented a Dornier maritime reconnaissance aircraft to Sri Lanka on completion of 75 years of India’s Independence. This memorable event has been happened a day before a high-tech Chinese missile and satellite tracking ship arrived at the island nation’s strategic Hambantota port.
Handing over ceremony:
S N Ghormade, Vice Chief of Indian Navy Vice Admiral had on official two-day visit to Sri Lanka where he was accompanied by Indian High Commissioner in Colombo Gopal Baglay.
Both officials has handed over the aircraft to the Sri Lanka Navy at the Sri Lanka Air Force base in Katunayake, contacting the Colombo international airport.
Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe was also attended the handover ceremony.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed that the aircraft would be a force multiplier and enhancing Sri Lanka’s defence to tackle multiple challenges such as human and drug trafficking, smuggling and other organized forms of crime in its coastal waters more effectively.
India’s neighboring policy:
Gifting of the Dornier aircraft emphasizes the cooperation between the two maritime neighbors in defence and security spheres.
Such cooperation is imagined to add further capability and capacity to Sri Lanka and is in line with the vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).
It should be noticed here that maritime security is identified as a key pillar of the Colombo Security Conclave.
Advantages of gifting aircraft:
After the handing over Dornier 228 to Sri Lanka by India it enhanced the mutual understanding, mutual trust and cooperation between these neighboring countries.
President Wickremesinghe expressed gratitude towards India for gifting the Dornier aircraft to Sri Lanka. He also states that India’s gift will help Sri Lanka to begin cooperation between the Sri Lanka Air Force and Sri Lanka Navy with the Indian Navy in maritime surveillance.
The aircraft gifted to Sri Lanka from the inventory of the Indian Navy to help the country meet its immediate security requirement.
The Indian Navy has already rendered extensive training to a team from Sri Lanka’s Navy and the Air Force to function the maritime surveillance aircraft.
