India’s 1st electric double decker AC bus

India’s first electric double decker AC bus has been unveiled by Union Road and Transport minister Nitin Gadkari in Mumbai.

India’s first electric double decker AC bus has been made by Switch Mobility and first time unveiled at Mumbai in Maharashtra. There are two new electric buses unveiled at the event including the first air-conditioned double-decker bus in the country which is going to join the fleet of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST).

Switch mobility is an electric vehicle brand of the India’s commercial vehicle maker Ashok Leyland. Ashok Leyland has already made and delivered over 100 electric double decker buses in United Kingdom.

As per the information received from BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) the manufacturer of the buses were first revealed its appearance at a function near Mantralaya in south Mumbai before delivering them over to the BEST undertaking.

Total contract:

The BEST has given a contract to a private company for the supply of 900 electric buses in phases. As per the scheduled phases 50 percent of buses are anticipated to be handed over by March 2023 and the remaining 50 percent thereafter.

The public transport service provider in Mumbai has projected to launch premium app-based public transport in the city.

BEST is the second biggest mode of public transport in Mumbai which ferries more than 30 lakh passengers every day with a fleet of around 3,700 buses.

Government of India has its flagship scheme ‘FAME India’ (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid and) Electric vehicles for promoting electric mobility in the country.

Under the FAME India policy India has made a target of making all government vehicles to be converted to electric vehicles by 2030.

The FAME India has also aim to terminate all fossil fuel based commercial fleets and logistics vehicles from all Indian cities by 2030.
